Overcoming Oral Presentation Anxiety: A Systematic Review of Tertiary ESL/EFL Students’ Challenges and Strategies

This
systematic
review
addresses
the
widespread
fear
of
oral
presentations
among
ESL/EFL
students
at
tertiary
level.
Based
on
a
comprehensive
academic
literature
from
2016
to
2023,
it
identifies
and
summarises
factors
contributing
such
anxiety
evaluates
effective
intervention
strategies
alleviate
it.
Key
include
environmental,
psychological,
language
resource
challenges.
Environmental
constraints
complexity
managing
large
classes
insufficient
practice
opportunities,
while
psychological
elements
stress,
motivation
nervousness.
Linguistic
challenges
relate
aspects
as
intonation
influence
students’
mother
tongue.
In
addition,
lack
authentic
teaching
materials
limitations
curriculum
highlights
resource-related
problems.
Various
were
highlighted,
focusing
technology-enhanced
methods,
assessment
techniques
student-centred
approaches.
These
aim
promote
presentation
skills
reducing
associated
anxiety.
Significantly,
educator’s
role
in
creating
conducive
learning
environment
need
integrate
technology
into
modern
educational
environments
was
emphasised.
While
findings
offer
valuable
insights,
they
are
often
context-specific
or
regionally
limited.
Therefore,
an
all-encompassing
solution
remains
elusive.
The
urgency
addressing
affects
career
trajectories.
It
argues
for
more
nuanced,
holistic
approach
that
combines
traditional
technologically
advanced
methods
meet
student’s
diverse
needs
globalised
landscape
