Three new species within the genus Psectrocladius Kieffer, 1906, namely (Mesopsectrocladius) wangi Liu, sp. nov. , (Psectrocladius) gracilis and malum are described illustrated based on morphological characteristics of adult male specimens. Furthermore, a comprehensive taxonomic key for identification males all known recorded in China is provided.

Psectrocladius, a genus within the species-rich subfamily Orthocladiinae (Diptera: Chironomidae), remains poorly resolved in molecular phylogenetics due to limited available data. Here, we sequenced and analyzed complete mitogenomes of five Psectrocladius species, using two Rheocricotopus species as outgroups. Our results reveal that are structurally conserved retain presumed ancestral gene order. The nucleotide composition these newly generated exhibits pronounced A + T bias, which is characteristic typical insect mitogenomes. substitution rates, estimated Ka/Ks ratios, indicate all protein-coding genes under purifying selection. strongest selection pressure was observed CO1 gene, while weakest ND5 gene. Both maximum likelihood Bayesian inference trees consistently show following topology: ((((P. schlienzi P. bisetus) barbimanus) oligosetus) aquatronus). This study provides key insights into chironomid their properties, offering valuable reference data for future research.
