Ursus americanus (American Black Bear) and Alligator mississippiensis Alligator) are sympatric in areas of Florida. During summer, alligators build nest mounds for eggs on freshwater shores, shallow marshes, tree islands. Biologists have speculated that bears might prey upon alligator nests because their opportunistic generalist diet, though such predation Florida has not been documented peer-reviewed literature. Herein, we report 3 photographed events American Bear Everglades National Park, Big Cypress Preserve, Dinner Island Ranch Wildlife Management Area, FL. each event, dug into consumed egg contents. The varied duration from 36 minutes to nearly 5 hours. 1 a female bear alongside 2 cubs the year. Future research explore extent effect populations benefits Bears.

ABSTRACT Florida, USA is a hotspot of biological invasions with over 500 non‐native species reported. Reptiles encompass most the wildlife 50 established, many which are sympatric and identified as invasive due to their impacts environment, economy, human health safety. Reports new reptiles occur, established continue expand ranges in increasing need for multitaxa detection monitoring capabilities. Invasive constrictor snakes primary focus management efforts life history traits that favor successful establishment dispersal Florida well native Everglades restoration efforts. While traditional survey methods rely on visual detections fail reliably detect constrictors, environmental DNA (eDNA) has proven be promising method cryptic rare across landscape. To address emerging needs multispecies we developed first tetraplex dPCR assay designed four snakes, including Burmese pythons ( Python bivittatus ), northern African P. sebae boa constrictors Boa rainbow boas Epicrates cenchria ). In this assay, no cross‐amplification was documented. This serves valuable tool faster more accurate these South Florida. Additionally, eDNA samples comprised soil water both tested positive python under controlled semicontrolled conditions being detectable up 2‐weeks post removal samples. Water yielded quickly 5 min after exposure organism. These data highlight utility sensitivity protocol monitoring.

Abstract Globalization is the increasing interconnectedness and interdependence of different countries regions that exchange goods, services, information, people, and… infectious diseases. When infected people move around planet, they can spread pathogens to naive populations. People also pathogens, vectors, animal hosts world, sometimes accidentally (e.g. vector stowaways on ships) purposefully pet trade). a pathogen, vector, or host establishes in region outside its native range causes harm species, it considered an invasive alien species. There are species do not play roles life cycles but which influence disease dynamics through their indirect effects system.

Abstract The ladder snake Zamenis scalaris was first reported in 2006 Formentera (Balearic Islands, Spain), until then a snake‐free Mediterranean island. Since 2016, intense control campaigns have been carried out and, for the time, captures over 2017–2020 used to analyze sex ratio, age, fat percentage, population density, and seasonality of this invasive population. male‐biased ratio found present work could be result capture biases caused by different detection probabilities between sexes. A reduction body length time observed, which indicate depletion larger snakes due capture. highest frequencies both sexes were May June, coinciding with mate searching period species native range indicating that increase their movements during period. Size‐specific survivorship curves indicated drop at medium sizes, suggested survival cost associated reproduction, presumably increased mortality mating season. Population density decreased from 1.812 snakes/ha 2017 0.669 2020. Evidence obtained has allowed evaluate main ecological aspects Z. current state on island Formentera. Results showed is well established Formentera, but prolonged its decline. This study becomes starting point improve management programs populations Balearic Islands. Long‐term as improvement adult females are strongly recommended attempt eradication
