Past research has shown that culture can form and shape our temporal orientation–the relative emphasis on the past, present, or future. However, there are mixed findings how orientations vary between North American East Asian cultures due to limitations of survey methodology sampling. In this study, we applied an inductive approach leveraged big data natural language processing two popular social media platforms–Twitter Weibo–to assess similarities differences in orientation United States America China, respectively. We first established predictive models from annotation used them classify a larger set English Twitter sentences (N TW = 1,549,136) Chinese Weibo WB 95,181) into four catetories–past, future, atemporal present. Results show is no significant difference past future orientations; large Americans derives their different prevailing focus (e.g., facts, ideas) present (Twitter) “here” “now”) (Weibo). Our contribute debate cultural with new perspectives following methodological approach. The study’s implications call for reevaluation measured cross-cultural studies, emphasizing use large-scale acknowledging category. Understanding guide effective communication strategies tailor approaches audience based orientations, enhancing intercultural understanding engagement.
