Background: The efficacy of behavioral cough suppression therapy (BCST) for refractory chronic (RCC) and unexplained (UCC) remains unclear due to limited evidence from small-scale single-center studies. Objective: To compile assess the quality randomized controlled trials evaluate effectiveness BCST. Design: This study included studies self-controlled related BCST involving adult patients with RCC or UCC. Data sources methods: We conducted an extensive search various English Chinese databases (e.g., PubMed, CNKI, CBM, VIP, Wanfang Journal Full-text Database) Clinical Trial Registration website up April 2024. selected underwent meta-analysis investigate impact on patient’s life frequency. Results: 12 showed that significantly improved Leicester Cough Questionnaire scores (MD = 4.50, 95% CI (4.03, 4.97), p < 0.001) compared simple verbal education group. In addition, a significant reduction in objective frequency was observed before BCST, statistically difference −8.06, (−9.71, −6.41), 0.001). Other measures symptoms, such as symptom scores, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) Severity Index (CSI) also improvement. Conclusion: revealed positive therapeutic effects RCC/UCC, potentially advancing its application broader clinical settings. registration: registered PROSPERO registration number CRD42024530746.

Chronic cough is a persistent condition that significantly affects patients' quality of life and poses diagnostic therapeutic challenges. Traditional anatomical approaches often fail to address the underlying mechanisms, leading suboptimal treatment outcomes. This review aims summarize challenges management chronic highlights recent advances several promising drug candidates in trials. PUBMED/CINAHL/Web Science/Scopus were searched (February 2025). Over past 40 years, has evolved from mere symptom recognized disease. A key observation hypersensitivity afferent vagus its central projections cause state urge being precipitated by otherwise innocuous stimuli. Clinical trial designs have also advanced, incorporating placebo run-in periods reduce effects refining patient-reported outcomes modern standards. Additionally, realization variability cough, both diurnal day-to-day, highlighted need for continuous monitoring, which only recently been available consequence revolution electronic applications. However, progress hindered widespread lack awareness among healthcare professionals patients, underscoring urgent education on this condition.

Chronic cough has increasingly been recognized as a distinct clinical entity that affects significant portion of the global population. Despite advancements in understanding its pathophysiology, treatment options remain limited. Opioid analgesics have long used for cough, and some proven clear antitussive potential. However, these yet to be approved by regulatory authorities chronic cough. Several novel synthetic opioid modulators demonstrated effects early-stage studies also failed translate into practice.

Chronic refractory cough (CRC) is a challenging condition that responds to speech pathology intervention. Clinical observation suggests abnormal breathing patterns occur in CRC and may be indirectly addressed as part of behavioural treatment, yet pattern changes are poorly understood. The aims this study were 1) describe patients with CRC, 2) compare features between inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO), 3) estimate the effect on clinical measures sensory motor dysfunction. This retrospective cross-sectional observational included 634 or ILO. A file audit assessment data was undertaken. Analysis self-reported symptoms (via questionnaires) voice those ILO conducted. Most participants (73%) demonstrated at least one feature. most common feature thoracic (69%) followed by oral (33%). type prevalence similar Abnormal associated reduced maximum phonation time (MPT); however, there no association these Newcastle Laryngeal Hypersensitivity Questionnaire scores. not significantly different from occurring There some MPT, suggesting impairment function.
