The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed human life and the world's environment. Most of major cities USA went under full or partial lockdown in first half 2020. However, it started gradually reopening, 2021, most public activity restrictions were lifted. Many studies reported a significant improvement air quality during USA, corresponding with reduced activity. We hypothesized that this improved was followed by decline to again due normalization 2021. This study is novel approach studying using spatio-temporal analysis at finer spatial level within city USA. It assessed change six parameters from pre-COVID era post-COVID Chicago Illinois, found activities COVID-19, reducing concentration some pollutants, especially PM2.5, NO2, CO. transitory, reverted era. Therefore, policies should be formulated practiced improve long term.

Cities have a significant role in the current climate change and air pollution crisis; hence, it is urgent to mitigate negative effects of urban settlements. This situation requires developing agile plans simultaneously investigate efficiency green infrastructures feedback from their targets. A crucial consideration for these potential rooftops – broadly abundant underused areas harbour sustainable, effective, viable alternatives. study aims develop new model optimize utilization feasible pollutant reducers, ability present reduce recommend most suitable city-scale solutions. The proposed combines mathematical patterns, GIS, sensitivity analysis. systematic adaptable approach was first applied heavily air-polluted Tehran city, which has vastly unused rooftops. leading application identified: i) two appropriate reducing alternatives photovoltaic roofs –; ii) optimized total performance alternative when simultaneous mitigation PM CO2 required compound iii) three indicators target building groups land use, height, surface scale iv) group residential medium height buildings. Applying with 3:1 ratio (photovoltaic: roof) all buildings enables 9% decrease city level emissions.
