‘Of all the processes that student of pathology is privileged to study, none as intriguing, fascinating, and perplexing neoplasia.’ This statement, a quote from William Boyd’s Textbook Pathology (1961), remains thought-provoking today when it was first written. Over decades since Boyd penned these words, our understanding molecular mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis development novel therapeutic approaches have advanced at revolutionary pace. special issue UJMS on cancer exemplifies remarkable progress in research, reaffirming perspective enigmatic nature endures.

Regulatory immune cells regulate responses through various mechanisms, affecting the occurrence, development, and therapeutic effects of tumors. In this article, we reviewed important roles regulatory cells, such as T (Tregs), B (Bregs), myeloid-derived suppressor (MDSCs), dendritic (DCregs), tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), in tumor microenvironment (TME). The immunomodulatory natural products, polysaccharides, polyphenols, glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, quinones, other compounds, which affect functions molecular signaling pathways, thereby enhancing potential antitumor response, are discussed. These findings provide new ideas possibilities for application products treatment, can help enhance effectiveness treatment improve patient prognosis.
