The Pacific seahorse ( Hippocampus ingens) is an important cultural and economic resource for coastal communities in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. However, conservation this species threatened by overfishing, habitat loss, lack awareness about its ecological importance. In study, we examine local knowledge use residents Sinaloa. Through ethnographic interviews participant observation, document traditional practices associated with species, including habitat, behavior, uses. We find that has played a crucial role management seahorse, community-based approaches are necessary to address challenges facing species. Abstract The Pacific seahorse ( Hippocampus ingens ) is a teleost fish native to the Ocean. In Mexico they are protected by national legislation; however, there no studies regarding their commercial use or population status. From conservation perspective threatened and from socio‐economic aspect represent source of income for many fishing communities. integration these two points view requires, among other things, recognition that fishers have knowledge skills can help implement strategies management plans seahorses habitats. objective was document Sinaloa about status current commercialization wild populations H. . For this, semi‐structured interviews participatory observation were carried out with 112 participants in main ports state (Mazatlán Topolobampo) July August 2021. data obtained coded then, through content analysis, systematized results allowed qualitative quantitative analysis. species found be caught using six different gears (catch per unit effort, CPUE = 0.07–1.24 boat day) an important financial value. Most catch incidentally, but three them mentioned targeting directly. Fishers perceive decrease catches size seahorse, as well increase prices. information analysed indicates exploited economic value, despite regulations. This study shows exploitation unsustainable requires implemention collaborative (e.g. stakeholder management, establishment marine areas, sustainable harvest practices, community‐based enforcement efforts, educational campaigns, research, partnerships) fully take into account practice local Mexico.
