The comparative evaluation of two aerosol droplets different chemical compositions using the dual-beam laser trapping technique can be employed for highly sensitive and accurate measurements water activities such droplets. However, it is technically difficult to load into adjacent optical traps that are only a few tens micrometers apart. To overcome this challenge, chamber with an overhanging roof was created. This prevented initially trapped from being contaminated by were subsequently introduced chamber. Herein, we report simultaneous aqueous ammonium sulfate (AS) droplet succinic acid (SA) in air technique. Two successfully fused through manipulation form mixed inorganic/organic air. experimental approach advantageous because forms under constant relative humidity (RH) conditions. previous studies, necessary compensate changes RH prior after fusion. assess validity theoretical predictions activity containing AS SA, equilibrium radii compared those calculated certain models.

Abstract Aerosol hygroscopic behavior plays a central role in determining climate effects and environmental influence of atmospheric particulates. Water-soluble organic acids (WSOAs) constitute significant fraction aerosols. These have complex impact on aerosol hygroscopicity due to their physical chemical interactions with inorganic salts. The mixing WSOAs salts exerts multiple the growth phase behaviors particles, largely depending composition ratio, acid properties, particle size between components. play critical water uptake characteristics especially low moderate RH ranges. previous studies reveal occurrence chemistry related chloride/nitrate/ammonium depletions droplets containing potential recycling HCl/HNO 3 /NH depletion may contribute budget reactive gases. A fundamental understanding for inorganic–WSOA systems is essential accurate parameterization models. However, there still lack comprehensive internally mixed systems. present review comprehensively summarizes impacts changes atmospherically relevant particles under subsaturated conditions, overviews recent advances process

Single particle levitation methods are a powerful subset of aerosol instrumentation that allow wide range properties and processes to be explored. One the most common forms single uses electric fields is generally referred as an electrodynamic balance (EDB). There many different kinds EDB's have been designed with applications in mind, corresponding array analytical tools developed characterize particles held these traps. In this tutorial, we review design development EDB discuss methods, including electrostatic analysis, light scattering, spectroscopy, imaging, for measurements hygroscopic growth, volatility, surface tension viscosity, diffusion, phase morphology. We go on recent advanced using mass spectrometry probe composition. This intended provide readers basic knowledge set up platform, measurement protocols based available tools, run experiments fundamental relevant their role atmosphere, impacts clouds climate, effects air quality, health disease, industrial processes.

Characterization, identification, and detection of aerosol particles in their native atmospheric states remain a challenge. Recently, optical trapping-Raman spectroscopy (OT-RS) has been developed demonstrated for characterization single, airborne particles. Such different chemical groups have characterized by OT-RS recent years many more are being studied. In this work, we collected single-particle Raman spectra measured using the technique began construction library fingerprints that may be used as reference potential identification atmosphere. We from eight categories including carbons, bioaerosols (pollens, fungi, vitamins, spores), dusts, biological warfare agent surrogates, etc. Among categories, spectral six published previously two other new. also discussed challenges, limitations, advantages aerosol-particle characterization, detection.
