Tipping
points
have
gained
substantial
traction
in
climate
change
discourses,
both
as
representing
the
possibility
of
catastrophic
and
irreversible
physical
societal
impacts
a
way
to
set
motion
positive,
rapid
self-sustaining
responses,
such
adoption
new
technologies,
practices,
behaviors.
As
such,
tipping
appear
ubiquitous
natural
social
systems.
Here,
we
critique
'tipping
point'
framings,
specifically
their
insufficiency
for
describing
diverse
dynamics
complex
systems;
reductionist
view
individuals,
agency
aspirations;
tendency
convey
urgency
without
fostering
meaningful
basis
action.
We
argue
clarifying
scientific
discussion
phenomena
lumped
under
umbrella
by
using
more
specific
language
capture
relevant
aspects
(e.g.,
irreversibility,
abruptness,
self-amplification,
potential
surprise)

evaluation

can
support
