Abstract This study explores how language shapes the teaching and learning of mathematics in Kalomo District, Zambia—a region where students grow up speaking local languages but are expected to switch English as instruction by Grade 5. Using a sequential mixed-methods approach, research investigates this linguistic shift impacts student performance, teachers cope with language-related challenges, what Zambia’s language-in-education policy means for everyday classroom practice. Data from tests surveys involving 200 30 show strong link between proficiency math achievement (r = 0.65, p < 0.05), ability explaining 34% differences performance. Interviews observations further reveal difficulties face grasping abstract concepts when taught they still learning. Teachers try bridge gap code-switching, using visual aids, incorporating culturally familiar examples. Despite their efforts, continue challenges like limited bilingual resources insufficient training. The calls more gradual transition English, backed materials targeted teacher support. These findings highlight importance context-sensitive strategies multilingual classrooms offer practical recommendations improving education linguistically diverse settings.
