This research explores how a new relation of production—the shift from human managers to algorithmic on digital platforms—manufactures workplace consent. While most has argued that the task standardization and surveillance accompany management will give rise quintessential “bad job” (Kalleberg, Reskin, Hudson, 2000; Kalleberg, 2011), I find that, surprisingly, many workers report liking finding choice while working under management. Drawing seven-year qualitative study largest sector in gig economy, ride-hailing industry, describe navigate being managed by an algorithm. begin showing algorithms segment work at multiple sites human–algorithm interactions this configuration process allows for more-frequent narrow choice. use two sets tactics. In engagement tactics, individuals generally follow nudges do not try get around system; deviance manipulate their input into system. behaviors associated with these tactics are practical opposites, they both elicit consent, or active, enthusiastic participation align efforts managerial interests, contribute seeing themselves as skillful agents. However, choice-based consent can mask more-structurally problematic elements work, contributing growing popularity what call “good bad” job.

Summary Rapid growth in the gig economy has been facilitated by increased use of algorithmic management (AM) online platforms (OPs) coordinating work. There a concomitant increase scholarship related to AM across scientific domains (e.g., computer science, engineering, operations management, sociology, and law). However, this literature is fragmented with scholars disagreeing on conceptualization measurement AM, as well lack consensus dimensions influencing various worker‐related outcomes, mechanisms through which these influences are exerted, relevant boundary conditions. To address issues, we systematically reviewed academic disciplines workers using natural language processing (NLP)‐based topic modeling. Our analysis yielded 12 topics, integrate an input‐process‐output (IPO) framework illustrate differing effects outcomes. Based our findings, provide comprehensive definition including its key dimensions, highlight main mediating pathways individual impact Finally, roadmap for future research (GE) organizational behavior lens.

Frontline Professionals in the Wake of Social Media Scrutiny: Examining the Processes of Obscured Accountability DOI

Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal Year: 2024, Volume and Issue: 69(3), P. 747 - 790

Professional accountability is considered important to the legitimacy and survival of a profession. Prior research has examined role top-down scrutiny by audiences, such as supervisors, regulators, certification agencies, in improving professional accountability. But advent social media platforms increasingly enabled bottom-up professionals—especially professionals on front line—by audiences customers public. In this research, I examine how when through (hereafter, scrutiny) impacts frontline professionals. Conducting an ethnography 911 emergency management organizations, find that call-takers—the setting—can obscure rather than improve elaborate how, why, under what conditions pushes deviate from their mandate, which, turn, obscures sense These processes also generate spillover effects everyday work mandate downstream (e.g., dispatchers, police officers), producing cascading set unintended consequences further for multiple actors across ecosystem.

Abstract This article systematically reviews the literature on online task crowdwork to investigate complex relationship between technology and work design platforms. We highlight diverse interpretations uses of technology, specifically platform features algorithms, in relation design. Our review reveals that serve as antecedents characteristics, while algorithms are so intertwined with job execution a new characteristic is needed model this interplay. introduce algorithmic embeddedness show it varies degree. When high, can be perceived either an affordance or constraint; when low, has limited impact crowdworkers' jobs. ‘gig characteristics model’ expands previous theories offers framework for understanding contemporary jobs rely highly algorithms. ABSTRACT Despite the highly controlled algorithmic work environment, on‐demand labor platform workers may devise strategies to enhance their competency (AC), facilitating better adaptation system. Yet, proactive engagement of with algorithms remains underexplored in empirical research. This study endeavors fill this gap by developing and validating first scale AC, while also shedding light on its antecedents consequences. Analysis data from five samples Chinese reveals that AC encompasses four dimensions: understanding, embracing, leveraging, remediating management. It is found positively influenced social support peers cognitive job crafting. Furthermore, shown account for additional variance customer‐oriented service behavior identification gig work, beyond explained related constructs. The paper concludes a discussion implications China's distinctive economy context generalizability findings.

However, our theoretical understanding this important phenomenon hindered by its fragmented development in the literature. To address shortcoming, we conduct comprehensive review BCA across wide range disciplines management, including corporate political activity, private regulation, strategic and organizational institutionalism. Based on review, develop an integrative framework that identifies triggers, outcomes, internal arrangements associated with BCA. In doing so, help common vocabulary unites different market non‐market forms BCA, thus deepening role business society.
