Abstract The widespread adoption of mobile phones (MPs) presents the possibility creating employment and self‐employment opportunities. Although several studies have documented impact MPs on income, link between MP ownership poverty reduction channeled by income diversification has not been fully explored. This paper aims to examine this relationship using nationally representative panel data fixed effect models account for confounding factors unobserved heterogeneity. Results indicate that is associated with increased diversification, particularly through on‐farm off‐farm self‐employment, as well non‐earned income. more pronounced in households lower levels education deprived areas. In addition, owning a also found decrease via diversification. Therefore, policies aimed at enhancing access technologies could create resilient portfolio decreasing transaction costs improving market efficiency, ultimately mitigating rural regions.
