In this study, we investigate the short-term impact of COVID-19 pandemic on China's carbon emissions. We use data for a panel 30 Chinese provinces over period January 2020 to December 2020. The results indicate that emissions in China decreased considerably during outbreak. This finding remains robust when different proxies core variables. had more pronounced emissionsin regions with surplus emission allowances, and negative effects were greater first half compared second half. Reduced are just temporary benefit pandemic. is unsustainable long-run. study provides valuable recommendations other countries achieve green economic recovery climate goals post-pandemic era
