Abstract Since 2016, China has established long‐term care insurance (LTCI) in the form of pilot projects that now extend to almost 50 cities. The need for is likely increase significantly. This article looks at initial studies undertaken a range cities on impact LTCI pilots health and use care, income, poverty consumption, informal labour force participation. It reviews policy assessments have identified gaps challenge provision LTCI. concludes with possible next steps developing drawing national international experiences.
