Pere Alberch played a pivotal role in shaping the field of evolutionary developmental biology during 1980s and 1990s. Whereas initially his contributions were sidelined by empirical advancements molecular revolution biology, theoretical insights have left lasting impact on discipline. This article provides comprehensive review legacy evolvability Alberch's ideas contemporary evo-devo, which included study morphogenesis as proper level causation, interplay between constraints natural selection, epistemic teratologies, origin novelties concept evolvability.

Abstract The term “homology” is persistently polysemous, defying the expectation that extensive scientific research should yield semantic stability. A common response has been to seek a unification of various prominent definitions. This paper proposes an alternative strategy, based on insight concepts function as tools for research: When analyzing conceptualizations homology, we preserve those distinguishing features support particular goals. We illustrate fruitfulness our strategy by application two cases. First, revisit Lankester's celebrated evolutionary reappraisal homology and argue his analysis distorted assimilation modern agendas. His “homogeny” does not mean same thing “homology,” “homoplasy” no mere antonym. Instead, Lankester uses both new terms pose question remains strikingly relevant—how do mechanistic historical causes morphological resemblance interact? Second, examine puzzle avian digit which exemplifies disciplinary differences in conceptualization assessment. Recent progress fueled development within relevant disciplines (paleontology developmental biology) especially increasing interdisciplinary cooperation. Conceptual played very little role this work, instead seeks concrete scenarios integrate all available evidence. Together these cases indicate complex relationship between other research.

Abstract The new foundation for the propensity interpretation of fitness (PIF), developed by Pence and Ramsey (Br J Philos Sci 64:851–881, 2013), describes as a probability distribution that encompasses all possible daughter populations to which organism may give rise, including in traits might change environments members encounter. This long-term definition is general enough avoid counterexamples faced previous mathematical conceptions PIF. However, there seem be downsides its generality: ecological role involves describing degree adaptedness between an specific environment it inhabits. When changes population encounter are included concept, becomes difficult see how can fulfill this role. In paper, we argue feature Ramsey’s view rather than bug: accommodates evolvability considerations, concern variation plays evolutionary processes. Building on foundations, show fitness— F —can partitioned into fourths: adaptedness, robustness two facets evolvability. Conceptualizing these last three components forces us consider played grains description both organisms when thinking about fitness. They track possibility could type way responding environmental challenges, or persists face novel environments. We just salient Together, decomposition provides more accurate picture factors involved success.
