In birds, patterns of development the adrenocortical response to stressors vary among individuals, types stressors, and species. Since there are benefits costs exposure elevated glucocorticoids, this variation is presumably a product selection such that animals modulate glucocorticoid secretion in contexts where doing so increases their fitness. study, we evaluated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activity first-hatched free-living seabird nestlings (black-legged kittiwakes, Rissa tridactlya ) at critical early age when food availability may drive establishment important parent-offspring intra-brood dynamics. We experimentally supplemented parents with (fed) measured chick baseline corticosterone 5 days post-hatch (of ~45 day nestling period) capacity rapidly increase an acute challenge (handling 15 min restraint bag). also used topical administration evaluate ability chicks downregulate physiologically relevant levels on short (minutes) time scale. found old capable releasing proportion magnitude challenge, showing differences between parental feeding treatments (supplementally-fed vs control), moderate handling, larger (comparable restraint-induced adults) differed from fed control nests. The application exogenous resulted circulating similar levels. induced downregulation HPA responsiveness handling. Parental supplemental did not affect absorbance/clearance or negative feedback. Thus, while endogenous sensitive environmental context, other aspects function, as rapid feedback and/or clear elevations corticosterone, not. conclude kittiwake robust responses novel challenges, availability, which be transduced behaviorally, nutritionally, via maternal effects. Questions remain about function rapid, large stress-induced very young chicks.

Abstract Rationale Stress during childhood or adolescence increases vulnerability to psychiatric disorders in adults. In adult rodents, the delayed effects of stress can increase anxiety-like behavior. These effects, however, be prevented with post-stress administration corticosterone (CORT). The effectiveness CORT preventing adolescent stress-induced emotional behavior alterations adulthood has yet investigated. Objectives Here, we investigated interactions between early and exogenous on social, aversive, drug-seeking mice, which are translationally related symptoms associated substance abuse disorders. Methods results A single drinking water (400ug/mL) for 24 h after social defeat context fear conditioning prevents defeat-induced avoidance, alters processing, anhedonia, stress-potentiated morphine place preference adulthood. Exogenous did not immediately prevent potentiation conditioned-place adolescents but so mice. However, when administered also incubation morphine-conditioned into Lastly, blunted endogenous was unrelated freezing a test. Conclusions This is first demonstration promoting socio-emotional resilience Our data suggest elevated experience promotes at least 40 days across developmental transition from effective critical understanding how impacts

Abstract Climate change is swiftly altering environmental winter conditions, leading to significant ecological impacts such as phenological shifts in many species. As a result, animals might face physiological mismatches due longer or earlier activity periods and are at risk of being exposed late spring freezes. Our study points for the first time complex challenges that amphibians result changing thermal conditions climate change. We investigated responses period warmer days sudden freeze common toad ( Bufo bufo ) by acclimating them 4°C 8°C 48 h exposing −2°C 6 h, respectively. assessed daily energy demands, determined body condition cold tolerance, explored molecular freezing through hepatic tissue transcriptome analysis, measured blood glucose levels. Toads acclimated higher temperatures showed expenditure reduced tolerance suggesting faster depletion stores loss acclimation during winters. Blood sugar levels were frozen toads indicating mobilization cryoprotective with which was further supported changed patterns proteins related metabolism. Overall, our results emphasize increased variability incurs costs may reduce reserves thus affect amphibian health survival. This pose serious threat breeding adults have subsequent effects population level.

Introduction: Epidemiological studies have reported a link between adrenocortical adenomas (ACA), obesity, and cardiometabolic risk. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is stress-induced protein synthesised predominantly in the liver, which regulates metabolism. The aim of current study was to evaluate concentration FGF21 patients with ACA its relationship hypothalamic-pituitary- adrenal function, markers health, adenoma size. Material methods: A total 197 were included analysis, 82 diagnosed mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS) 115 non-functioning incidentaloma (NFAI). MACS defined as serum post 1 mg dexamethasone test (DST) ≥ 1.8 μg/dL. In each patient weight, height, waist circumference measured, body mass index (BMI) calculated. Serum concentrations FGF21, cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density (LDL-C), triglycerides, glucose, insulin measured. cortisol-to ACTH ratio, homeostatic model assessment for resistance (HOMA-IR), lipid accumulation product (LAP), (CMI) Adrenal tumour size evaluated from imaging procedures. Results: significantly higher than NFAI, independent BMI. There no differences NFAI groups regarding HOMA-IR, LAP, CMI. We observed positive correlation level after DST, well cortisol-to-ACTH ratio. negatively correlated sulphate (DHEAS). significant correlations BMI, circumference, but levels positively TG, Positive relationships found. Conclusions: Higher tumours when compared represent another pathophysiological related chronic glucocorticoid excess.
