Microplastics are a globally emerging contaminant in the environment, but little is known about potential risks of microplastics to human health. Possible exposure routes humans include ingestion, inhalation, and dermal penetration, with last these needing equal attention as other two main routes. Evidence showed presence human-derived biological samples (i.e., excrement, biofluids, tissues). Most toxicological studies on were based laboratory rodents cells. Energy homeostasis, intestinal microflora, reproductive, immune, nervous systems regarded targets microplastics. The toxicity microstructures including lysosomes, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus further revealed health at cellular levels. As carrier, also had magnify contaminants environment (e.g., plasticizer, metals, antibiotics, microorganisms). Extensive environmental pollution by microplastics has increased the risk of human exposure to plastics. However, biosafety polypropylene (PP-MPs), especially PP particles < 10 μm, in mammals not been studied. Thus, here, we explored mechanism action and effect small large PP-MPs, via oral ingestion, on mouse intestinal tract. Male C57BL/6 mice were administered suspensions (8 70 μm; 0.1, 1.0, mg/mL) for 28 days. PP-MP treatment resulted inflammatory pathological damage, ultrastructural changes epithelial cells, imbalance redox system, reactions colon. Additionally, observed damage tight junctions colon decreased mucus secretion ion transporter expression. Further, apoptotic rate colonic cells significantly after treatment. The expression pro-inflammatory pro-apoptosis proteins tissue, while anti-inflammatory anti-apoptosis decreased. In summary, this study demonstrates that PP-MPs induce apoptosis barrier through oxidative stress activation TLR4/NF-κB signal pathway mice, which provides new insights into toxicity MPs mammals.

Fish body growth is a trait of major importance for individual survival and reproduction. It has implications in population, ecology, evolution. Somatic controlled by the GH/IGF endocrine axis influenced nutrition, feeding, reproductive-regulating hormones as well abiotic factors such temperature, oxygen levels, salinity. Global climate change anthropogenic pollutants will modify environmental conditions affecting directly or indirectly fish performance. In present review, we offer an overview somatic its interplay with feeding regulatory summarize effects global warming main on these axes.

Abstract Insects damaging and penetrating plastic packaged materials has been reported since the 1950s. Radical innovation breakthroughs of biodegradation have initiated discovery plastics by Tenebrio molitor larvae in 2015 followed Galleria mellonella 2017. Here we review updated studies on insect-mediated plastics. Plastic insect larvae, mainly some species darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae) pyralid moths (Pyralidae) is currently a highly active potentially transformative area research. Over past eight years, publications increased explosively, including discoveries ability different to biodegrade plastics, performance, contribution host microbiomes, impacts polymer types their physic-chemical properties, responsible enzymes secreted gut microbes. To date, almost all major polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), terephthalate (PET), polyurethane (PUR), polystyrene (PS) can be biodegraded T. ten other representing Tenebrionidae Pyralidae families. The processes are symbiotic reactions or performed synergistic efforts both gut-microbes rapidly depolymerize with hourly half-lives. digestive ezymens bioreagents screted insects play an essential role plasatic certain New research itself, transcriptomes, proteomes metabolomes evaluated mechanisms insects. Solanum lycopersicum L., a crop grown worldwide with high nutritional value for the human diet, was used to test impact of microplastics on plant growth, productivity, and fruit quality. Two most represented in soils, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polyvinyl chloride (PVC), were tested. Plants pots an environmentally realistic concentration and, during whole life cycle, photosynthetic parameters, number flowers fruits monitored. At end cultivation, biometry ionome evaluated, along production Both pollutants had negligible effects shoot traits, only PVC causing significant reduction fresh weight. Despite apparent low or no toxicity vegetative stage, both decreased case PVC, also their weights. The plastic polymer-induced decline coupled wide variations ionome, marked increases Ni Cd. By contrast there nutritionally valuable lycopene, total soluble solids, phenols. Altogether, our results reveal that can not limit productivity but negatively quality enhance food safety hazards, thus raising concerns potential health risks humans.
