There is a consistent economic need to increase diversity in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines groups of STEM professionals graduating from colleges universities our nation. However, research notates that minoritized populations such as women and/or persons color, continue be underrepresented disciplines. Furthermore, literature suggests teachers who implement culturally responsive instructional strategies the classroom positively impact empower students develop positive attitudes towards STEM, hence aiding an recruitment retainment or STEM-related careers. This book chapter will trace provide teaching strategies, lesson plan adaptation practices can used classrooms effort influence student's decisions persist careers fields.

Abstract Understanding students' sentiments are crucial as they impact their motivation and regulation strategies. However, limited work has been devoted to understanding with respect classroom experiences in STEM courses, particularly courses conceptually difficult concepts. In this regard, work-in-progress study used Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithm analyze the of engineering written reflections then understand change during semester. course, students were introduced computer programming MATLAB, which is considered a undertaking for novice learners. Specifically, will be guided by two research questions: 1) What kind student occur when reflect on interesting confusing aspect lecture? 2) How do over semester? To inform study, we gathered using CourseMIRROR application multiple sections introductory course (N = 300 students). This asked aspects lecture after end each throughout For sentiment analysis, use Valence Aware Dictionary Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) assess generating normalized score ranging from + 1 (extreme positive) -1 negative). Based analysis results, employ descriptive statistics first question counting frequency found reflections. second question, one-way repeated measure ANOVA splitting lectures (N=21) into three equal time points seeing scores across these points. We hypothesize that would have positive associated negative while reflecting lecture. Due nature (i.e., concepts become gradually complex), expect see declining time. The findings provide insights suggestions improve engagement courses.

A valid and practical STEM-based introduction to quantum physics module has been successfully developed. The development uses a modified Rowntree model consisting of three stages: the planning stage, evaluation stage. Tessmer's formative was carried out at including self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one evaluation, small group evaluation. Data collection techniques used walkthrough data questionnaire data. results review show that EVR value from experts is 88.1%. In HEOS student responses use this 88.6% (efficient type). revised into prototype two re-tested apart these stages. trial, score using 93.0%. Thus, based on study results, it concluded developed (teaching material) practical.
