Abstract Industry 5.0 (I5.0) is the next industrial revolution that will leverage human intervention in collaboration with intelligent, logical, and smart machines to attain even more user-preferred resource-efficient manufacturing supply chain solutions. The agri-food sector has come under increasing pressure to increase safety standards. Both consumers and expert authorities are demanding that the chain implement higher levels of traceability transparency make system less susceptible fraud ensure quality. Four decades ago, the concept of megatrends was introduced by John Naisbitt (1929-2021). The popular tool has since been adopted researchers, consultants, private enterprises and governments to explore long-term futures across a diverse range regions, industries socioeconomic domains. widespread use led variability in how is applied lack scientific rigour around approach, previous attempts synthesise literature have incomplete. current paper presents first systematic review publications from 1982 2022, including bibliometric analysis publishing trends. We provide consensus view defined academic non-academic propose standardised process for improving megatrend analyses. From an 267 studies, we present novel diagnostic defining that brings together characteristics (e.g., its multidisciplinary nature, drivers change, breadth, long time span forward-focused lens).
