Environmental pollution is a growing threat to natural ecosystems and one of the world’s most pressing concerns. The increasing worldwide use pharmaceuticals has elevated their status as significant emerging contaminants. Pharmaceuticals enter aquatic environments through multiple pathways related anthropogenic activity. Their high consumption, insufficient waste treatment, incapacity organisms completely metabolize them contribute accumulation in environments, posing all life forms. Various analytical methods have been used quantify pharmaceuticals. Biotechnology advancements based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques, like eDNA metabarcoding, enabled development new for assessing monitoring ecotoxicological effects metabarcoding valuable biomonitoring tool pharmaceutical because it (a) provides an efficient method assess predict status, (b) identifies sources, (c) tracks changes levels over time, (d) assesses ecological impact pollution, (e) helps prioritize cleanup mitigation efforts, (f) offers insights into diversity composition microbial other bioindicator communities. This review highlights issue while emphasizing importance using modern NGS-based actions its environmental more consistently effectively.

Pharmaceuticals are widely acknowledged to be a threat aquatic life. Over the last two decades, steady use of biologically active chemicals for human health has been mirrored by rise in leaking these into natural environments. The aim this work was detect toxicity sodium fluoride (NaF) exposure and platinum-derived drugs an ecological setting on organism development. From 24 96 h post-fertilization, zebrafish embryos were treated dosages NaF 10 mg/L-1 + cisplatin (CDDP) 100 μM, one with carboplatin (CARP) 25 CDDP μM CARP μM. Fluoride combination Cisplatin Carboplatin (non-toxic concentration) had effect survival hatching rate according study. Additionally, it significantly disturbed antioxidant defense system increased ROS larvae. associated production apoptosis-related proteins (caspase 3, bax, bcl-2) downregulation acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, while no seen single exposure.

Cancer remains one of the most difficult diseases to treat, requiring continuous research into innovative therapeutic strategies. Conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy are effective a certain extent but often have significant side effects carry risk resistance. In recent years, concept dual-acting therapeutics has attracted considerable attention, particularly combination DNA alkylating agents antimicrobial peptides. alkylation, well-known mechanism in cancer therapy, involves attachment alkyl groups DNA, leading damage subsequent cell death. Antimicrobial peptides, on other hand, been shown be anticancer due their ability selectively disrupt membranes modulate immune responses. This review aims explore synergistic potential these two modalities. It examines mechanisms action, current findings, promise they offer improve efficacy specificity treatments. By combining cytotoxic power alkylation with unique properties dual-action may new more approach fighting cancer.

Pharmaceutical compounds represent a class of emerging contaminants present in the environment. Their intense (and increasing) use human and veterinary medicine leads to their discharge, mainly via excretion, into wastewater treatment plants where removal is inefficient. A specific pharmaceuticals used fight cancer, known as antineoplastic or anticancer drugs, has gained increased attention regarding possible environmental hazard due pharmacological properties, which include nonselective targeting DNA replication mechanisms cell division processes, potentially inducing apoptosis. To date, there limited information concerning effects drugs and/or metabolites species inhabiting freshwater environments, let alone marine estuarine compartments. In review, we aimed assemble impact that have on biological traits species, identify gaps current assessment, make recommendations promote an efficient assessment Environ Toxicol Chem 2022;41:1793-1807. © 2022 SETAC.

Bimetallic (Fe-Cu) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/FeCu catalysts at 0.2% wt. were developed by a co-precipitation method, modifying the Fe-Cu molar proportions (i.e., Fe40Cu60, Fe20Cu80 Fe10Cu90) tested for degradation of cytostatic drug, cyclophosphamide (CP) in aqueous solution using photo-Fenton process (UV-Vis). Physicochemical characterization was carried out complementary techniques (gas adsorption, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS) results correlated with catalytic performance. The effect pH on contaminant catalyst stability (metal leaching) studied. point synergetic rGO/FeCu comparison to monometallic or without carbonaceous material. best performance achieved rGO/Fe10Cu90 achieving 82% CP natural regarding 87% obtained under acid conditions (pH 3). This fact avoids usual acidification solutions during Fenton-like processes prevent metal leaching, increasing catalysts, as demonstrated after consecutive cycles, maintaining efficiency above 75%. Cytotoxicity tests certificated low toxicity by-product derived from process.
