The exponential increase in global plastic usage has led to the emergence of nano- and microplastic (NMP) pollution as a pressing environmental issue due its implications for human other mammalian health. We have developed methodologies extract solid materials from tissue samples by saponification ultracentrifugation, allowing highly specific quantitative analysis plastics pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). As benchmark, placenta were analyzed using fluorescence microscopy automated particle count, which demonstrated presence >1-micron particles fibers, but not nano-sized particles. Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in river and freshwater ecosystems. However, the hydraulic hydrological mechanisms that regulate activation emissions of MPs from both land surface subsurface into rivers not well understood. This study aims to quantify instream MP concentration load a remote headwater catchment (Taff Bargoed, Wales UK), which drains UK's largest opencast coal mine (Ffos-y-fran), over two-year period. Small fibers (< 1 mm) composed acrylic polyester dominated sampled Taff while less commonly observed fragments were mostly polysulfone.
