Conventional metrics for tracking infectious diseases, including case and outbreak data syndromic surveillance, can be resource-intensive, misleading, comparatively slow with prolonged collection, analysis authentication. This study examined the 2022–2023 Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) season in a contiguous metropolitan area connected by an active international land border, affording opportunity comparison of respiratory virus spanning two independent public health jurisdictions. Time-lagged cross correlation qualitative examination wastewater signals showed that peak Detroit (MI, USA) RSV predated Windsor (ON, Canada) approximately 5 weeks. A strong positive relationship was observed between N-gene concentrations hospitalization rates Windsor-Essex (Kendall's τ = 0.539, p ≤ 0.001, Spearman's ρ 0.713, 0.001) as well 0.739, 0.888, 0.001). demonstrated surveillance reveal regional differences infection dynamics communities provide measure prevalence RSV, underreported disease. These findings support use cost-effective tool monitoring to enhance existing systems better inform disease mitigation strategies.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been detected in wastewater. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a practical and cost-effective tool for the assessment controlling of pandemics probably examining SARS-CoV-2 presence. Implementation WBE during outbreaks not without limitations. Temperature, suspended solids, pH, disinfectants affect stability viruses Due to these limitations, instruments techniques have utilized detect SARS-CoV-2. sewage using various concentration methods computer-aided analyzes. RT-qPCR, ddRT-PCR, multiplex PCR, RT-LAMP, electrochemical immunosensors employed low levels viral contamination. Inactivation crucial preventive measure against disease 2019 (COVID-19). To better assess role wastewater as transmission route, detection, quantification need be refined. In this paper, latest improvements quantification, inactivation are explained. Finally, limitations future research recommendations thoroughly described.

Abstract Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is an unobtrusive method used to observe patterns in illicit drug use, poliovirus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). The pandemic need for surveillance measures have led the rapid acceleration of WBE research development globally. With infrastructure available monitor SARS-CoV-2 from wastewater 58 countries globally, there potential expand targets applications public health protection, such as other viral pathogens, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), pharmaceutical consumption, or exposure chemical pollutants. Some been explored academic but are not inform decision-making. We reflect on current knowledge these identify barriers opportunities expanding beyond SARS-CoV-2. This paper critically reviews identifies important gaps be a useful tool health. It considers possible uses pathogenic viruses, AMR, chemicals. summarises evidence following: (1) presence markers stool urine; (2) environmental factors influencing persistence wastewater; (3) methods sample collection storage; (4) prospective detection quantification; (5) reducing uncertainties; (6) further considerations use.

Background: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has become crucial for early microbial outbreak detection and public health surveillance globally, underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, despite advancements in sampling analyses, interpreting results estimating infection rates pose challenges. Enhancements sewer system engineering, understanding wastewater environment, addressing impact of environment on accuracy are needed. Objective: This scoping review aims to identify engineering knowledge gaps WBE guide future study designs. Design: Research “wastewater-based epidemiology” involving “engineering”, published between 2015 2023, was extracted from Scopus database. Results: examines elements influencing WBE’s precision reliability, especially identifying measuring SARS-CoV-2 RNA. It identifies significant effects analytical practices, wastewater’s composition performance. Conclusions: calls further investigation into economical evaluation methods these factors enhance data normalization interpretation, utilizing existing treatment plant used control, which could be a cost-effective approach over more expensive population biomarkers. approach, aside SARS-CoV-2, holds potential application broader number types diseases, as well consumption habits.
