Upon mating, fruit fly females become refractory to further mating for several days. An ejaculate protein called sex peptide (SP) acts on uterine neurons trigger this behavioural change, but it is still unclear how the SP signal modifies decision. Here we describe two groups of female-specific local interneurons that are important process-the ventral abdominal lateral (vAL) and medial (vAM) interneurons. Both vAL vAM express myoinhibitory (Mip)-GAL4. positive Mip neuropeptides sex-determining transcriptional factor doublesex. Silencing in induces active rejection male courtship attempts, whereas activation makes even mated receptive re-mating. located ganglion (AG) where they relay other AG project brain. appear promote receptivity both virgins females, although dispensable normal virgin females.

In Drosophila, a dedicated olfactory channel senses male pheromone, cis-vaccenyl acetate (cVA), promoting female courtship while repelling males. Here, we show that separate cVA-processing streams extract qualitative and positional information. cVA sensory neurons respond to concentration differences in 5-mm range around male. Second-order projection encode the angular position of by detecting inter-antennal concentration, which are amplified through contralateral inhibition. At third circuit layer, identify 47 cell types with diverse input-output connectivity. One population responds tonically flies, second is tuned looming, integrates taste coincidentally promote mating. The separation features resembles mammalian what where visual streams; together multisensory integration, this enables behavioral responses appropriate specific ethological contexts.

Aggressive social interactions are used to compete for limited resources and regulated by complex sensory cues the organism's internal state. While both sexes exhibit aggression, its neuronal underpinnings understudied in females. Here, we identify a population of sexually dimorphic aIPg neurons adult Drosophila melanogaster central brain whose optogenetic activation increased, genetic inactivation reduced, female aggression. Analysis GAL4 lines identified an unbiased screen increased chasing behavior revealed involvement another neuron, pC1d, implicated pC1d as core nodes regulating Connectomic analysis demonstrated that interconnected suggest may exert part their effect gating flow visual information descending neurons. In recent years, our knowledge of the conserved master-switch gene doublesex (dsx) and its function in regulating development dimorphic traits insects has deepened considerably. Here, a comprehensive overview is given on properties male- female-specific dsx transcripts yielding DSXF DSXM proteins Drosophila melanogaster, many downstream targets that they regulate. As have cell-autonomous sex determination, it was assumed would be expressed every somatic cell, but research showed only when cell required to show sexual identity through or morphology. This spatiotemporal regulation expression not been established D. melanogaster all insect species studied. Gradually, appreciated could no longer viewed as orchestrating behaviour each instead should interpreter for expressing this request, making central nexus determination.
