Abstract The Earth system and the human are intrinsically linked. Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have led to climate crisis, which is causing unprecedented extreme events could trigger tipping elements. Physical social forces can lead points cascading effects via feedbacks telecoupling, but current generation of climate-economy models do not generally take account these interactions feedbacks. Here, we show importance interplay between societies systems in creating way they turn affect sustainability security. lack modeling links an underestimation societal risks as well how be harnessed moderate physical impacts. This calls for systematic development a better integration understanding at different spatial temporal scales, specifically those that enable decision-making reduce likelihood crossing local or global points.

Climate change is a severe global threat. Research on climate and vulnerability to natural hazards has made significant progress over the last decades. Most of research been devoted improving quality information hazard data, including exposure specific phenomena, such as flooding or sea-level rise. Less attention given assessment embedded social, economic historical conditions that foster societies. A number assessments based indicators have developed past years. Yet an essential question remains how validate those at scale. This paper examines different options in terms their internal external validity, focusing two indicator systems used WorldRiskIndex INFORM index. The reviews these index best practices same time presents new analysis results show linkages between level disaster outcomes. Both review support each other help communicate validity uncertainty assessments. Next statistical validation methods, we discuss importance appropriate link indicators, data indicandum. We found mortality per event from floods, drought storms 15 times higher for countries ranked highly vulnerable compared classified low vulnerable. These findings highlight starting points move towards resilient development. Priority should be not just regions are likely face more future but also confronted with high already.

Abstract The African coast contains heritage sites of ‘Outstanding Universal Value’ that face increasing risk from anthropogenic climate change. Here, we generated a database 213 natural and 71 cultural to assess exposure coastal flooding erosion under moderate (RCP 4.5) high 8.5) greenhouse gas emission scenarios. Currently, 56 (20%) are at 1-in-100-year extreme event, including the iconic ruins Tipasa (Algeria) North Sinai Archaeological Sites Zone (Egypt). By 2050, number exposed is projected more than triple, reaching almost 200 emissions. Emissions mitigation RCP 8.5 4.5 reduces very highly by 25%. These findings highlight urgent need for increased change adaptation in Africa, governance management approaches, site-specific vulnerability assessments, monitoring, protection strategies.

Abstract Urban overheating, driven by global climate change and urban development, is a major contemporary challenge that substantially impacts livability sustainability. Overheating represents multifaceted threat to the well‐being, performance, health of individuals as well energy efficiency economy cities, it influenced complex interactions between building, city, scale climates. In recent decades, extensive discipline‐specific research has characterized heat assessed its implications on human life, including ongoing efforts bridge neighboring disciplines. The horizon now encompasses problems involving wide range disciplines, therefore comprehensive integrated assessments are needed address such interdisciplinarity. Here, our objective go beyond review existing literature instead provide broad overview defining holistic pathways for addressing life. We (a) detail characterization hazards exposure across different scales in various (b) identify individual sensitivities overheating increase vulnerability cause adverse populations, (c) elaborate adaptive capacities cities can adopt, (d) document energy, (e) discuss frontiers theoretical applied climatology, built environment design, governance toward reduction at scales. most critical challenges future application identified, targeting both gaps need greater integration assessments.
