With increasing interest in automatic and intelligent systems to enhance the building construction industry, digital twins (DT) are gaining popularity as cost-effective solutions meet stakeholder requirements. Comprising real-time multi-asset connectivity, simulation, decision support functionalities, many recent studies have utilised Industry 4.0 technologies with DT fulfil construction-specific applications. However, there is no comprehensive review our knowledge, holistically examining benefits of using a platform from angles technologies, project management, lifecycle. To bridge this gap, systematic literature 182 papers on DT-in-construction works over past 6 years conducted address three perspectives. In review, unified framework first modelled incorporate within structure. Next, Six M methodology (comprising Machine, Manpower, Material, Measurement, Milieu, Method) based Ishikawa’s Diagram lifecycle considerations proposed highlight advantages ensuring successful projects. Passports for circularity, e.g., digital product passports and material (MPs), have gained recognition as essential policy instruments the Circular Economy goals of European Union. Despite growing number approaches, there is a lack knowledge about data requirements availabilities to create MPs existing buildings. By deploying mixed-method research design, this study identified potential users their needs within context social housing organisations. Three rounds validation interviews with total 38 participants were conducted template an MP covering maintenance, renovation, demolition stages. This was then tested in case from Netherlands determine critical gaps creating MPs, including, but not limited composition materials, presence toxic or hazardous contents, condition assessment, reuse recycling product. Finally, framework proposed address these by utilising capabilities enabling technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence scanning systems) supportive human actors. supports further innovation provision narrow, slow, close, regenerate loops.

Recent studies have advocated that digital technologies (DTs) positively affect the transition of a linear economy model to circular (CE) and facilitate enterprises in implementing strategies. Despite this general statement, literature still overlooks how should apply various DTs Industry 4.0 across entire product lifecycle operationalize CE-related To fill gap, paper proposes conceptual framework exploring terms CE operationalization from perspective lifecycle. Based on insights gained through systematic review, we clarify can performance objectives three stages lifecycle: design, use, recovery or recycling. Furthermore, study DTs, such as Internet things, big data, cloud computing, are utilized toward CE. applied service-oriented product-service system contributes innovation into business models make full use idle resources provide high-quality personalized services. We adopted objectives: using fewer materials resources, extending lifespan, closing loop evaluate effects promoting development. By investigating objectives, developed advances knowledge regarding role an enabler Our findings practical reference enabling researchers managers harness potential support transition.

This systematic review critically examines the intersection of digital transformation and circular economy (CE) principles within built environment. While digitalisation has been shown to enhance efficiency, safety, sustainability in construction, its role fostering circularity is less established. study analyzes literature from 2010 2022, focusing on how technologies such as open-BIM, twins, material passports, blockchain, RFID, gamification can integrate into building lifecycle. The findings reveal that while tools are pivotal design construction phases, their application existing structures straightforward, with challenges including absence twins for demolished structures, high costs retrofit digitalisation, predominant focus environmental benefits over practical implementation. also highlights need a unified strategy greater cross-industry collaboration. Future research directions proposed, development localized banks, RFID circularity, scope Design Disassembly (DfD) tools, inventory buildings, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) databases, policy implications promoting practices.
