Steroid sex hormones play an important role in the sexual differentiation of fish. Thus, it is not surprising that chemical contaminants with steroid-like activities were considered as responsible for unusual occurrence gonadal intersex conditions and other aberrations feral In this review, we give overview about field data summarise categorise experimental evidence links disruption development gonochoristic fish to contaminations by endocrine disrupting chemicals. A comprehensive on laboratory studies using water-borne exposures histopathological analysis given. Parameters ranging from simple quantitative characteristics such ratio, number reversed fish, gonadosomatic index (GSI) detailed morphometric analyses have been considered. Categorisation indicates 2 major groups chemicals apparently conserved effects across species, i.e. estrogenic/anti-androgenic or androgenic/anti-estrogenic compounds. Since gross morphological parameters histological are often first measured campaigns sampling review supports critical evaluation present future confirmation rejection causative exposure Furthermore, combination molecular endpoints processed will be useful deduce mechanistic information potential

Feminized responses are widespread in wild populations of roach, Rutilus rutilus, living UK rivers, and some these have been shown to arise as a consequence exposure wastewater treatment works (WwTW) effluent discharges the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) they contain. The causation ovotestis condition however, has yet be established. Furthermore, impact long-term WwTW effluents on reproductive fitness fish is not known, this information crucial for population level effect assessments. We undertook chronic roach treated estrogenic up 3.5 years assess principally effects subsequent fitness, determined through parentage analysis offspring from competitive breeding study. In generating study we found that full strength until sexual maturity resulted sex reversal almost all males population; 98% exposed were phenotypic females, containing ovaries. 50% dilution contained (21% male roach) was absent control population. studies, applying DNA microsatellites parentage, show presumptive females bred normally, albeit absence nonexposed but putative sex-reversed contributed poorly, if at all, population, depending competition. These novel findings add new dimension assessments populations.

Daily variation in the estrogenic activity of effluent released by a modern sewage treatment plant (STP) was measured and its effects on physiology, behavior, reproductive success male fish were evaluated. As an estrogen receptor binding assay, daily this both high extremely variable (42 ± 25.4 [mean SD] ng 17β-estradiol (E2) equivalents/L; n = 18). Liver VTG mRNA expression fathead minnows (FHM) covaried with assay estimates, suggesting that these fluctuations are biologically relevant. Tests which exposed FHMs to either fluctuating levels E2, constant concentration E2 (time-weighted reflect average concentrations), or control (no E2) demonstrated while detrimental spawning success, fact varied manner without additional influence. The variability effluent's estrogenicity suggests studies concerned STP effluents should collect multiple samples then test them appropriate time-weighted basis.
