Secondary microplastics usually come from the breakdown of larger plastics due to weathering and environmental stress cracking plastic wastes. In present study, 5013 fragments were collected coastal beaches, estuary dikes, lake banks in China. The fragment sizes ranged 0.2 17.1 cm, dominant polymers polypropylene polyethylene. Cracks observed on surfaces 49–56% fragments. Based extracted crack images, we proposed a general pattern system including four types with specific definitions, abbreviations, symbols. two-dimensional spectral analysis cracks suggests that first three patterns showed good regularity supported rationality system. Some metrics (e.g., line density) closely correlated carbonyl index additives phthalate esters) For investigation field, succinct protocol, which five ranks established directly characterize degree based density values. was successfully applied distinguish differences features at two representative sites, indicates is useful tool describe morphological changes environment.

Marine and coastal sediments from the harbor of Cartagena (Spain) its adjoining beach were investigated regarding their microplastic burden. Fibers accounted for 47.62% 61.66% in marine sediments, respectively, followed by films (31.43% 18.76%) fragments (20.95% 18.65%). Polyvinyl (36.07%), polypropylene (21.31%), polyethylene (18.03%) isolated low-density (40.71%), (20.16%), acrylate (11.37%) sediments. Highest concentrations found deepest (24.0 m) furthest zone seashore (18 m). Carbonyl index increased intermediate area (12.5 (0.51), whilst vinyl was maximum samples (1.94), reporting Norrish type I II reactions, respectively. Coastal collected close to high tide line displayed highest average values both indices, 1.57 1.29, indicating a higher exposition weathering variables.

Rivers are key pathways for the transfer of microplastics (MP) to marine environments. However, there considerable uncertainties about amount transported by rivers ocean; this results in inaccuracies our understanding microplastic quantity and transport freshwater systems. Additionally, it has been suggested that may represent long-term sinks, with accumulating sediment due their high density or other biological, chemical, physical factors. The atmosphere is also an important pathway which airborne enter aquatic habitats. Here, we compare first time type concentration these environmental mediums (air, water sediment) along a major river (Ganges), from sea source understand 1) abundance, 2) spatial distribution, 3) characteristics. Mean abundance settling was 41.12 MP m2 day-1; while concentrations were 57.00 kg-1 0.05 L-1. Across all sites mediums, rayon (synthetically altered cellulose) dominant polymer (54-82 %), followed acrylic (6-23 %) polyester (9-17 %). Fibres shape (95-99 blue most common colour (48-79 number per sample increased Ganges sea. higher population densities correlated air samples. We suggest clothing likely be prominent system, influenced atmospheric deposition, wastewater direct input (e.g. handwashing clothes Ganges), especially areas. subsequent release environment strongly shape, large proportion denser prior discharging ocean.

Pollution-induced neurotoxicity is of high concern. This pilot study investigated the potential relationship between presence microplastics (MPs) in brain 180 wild fish (Dicentrarchus labrax, Platichthys flesus, Mugil cephalus) from a contaminated estuary and activity acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme. MPs were found 9 samples (5% total), all them D. labrax collected summer, which represents 45% this species that season (20). Seventeen recovered samples, with sizes ranging 8 to 96 μm. Polyacrylamide, polyacrylic acid one biopolymer (zein) identified by Micro-Raman spectroscopy. Fish showed lower (p ≤ 0.05) AChE than those where not found. These findings point contribution induced long-term exposure pollution, stressing need further studies on topic increase 'One Health' protection.

Metal pollution in sediments has long been recognized, while are also a long-term sink for microplastics (MPs). A comprehensive survey of 21 locations around Qatari coastline investigated abundance high-shore intertidal concentration metals both on sediment particles. ranged from 3 to 156 particles·kg−1 (12–624 particles·m−2) with polyethylene being the most abundant (27.4 %). showed physical morphologies, 76 % displayed signs chemical degradation confirmed by carbonyl absorption peak profile, possibly due exposure harsh conditions Arabian Gulf shores.
