Abstract Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as prominent contenders in the realm of luminescent nanomaterials over past decade owing to their tunable optical properties, robust photostability, versatile surface functionalization and doping potential, low toxicity, straightforward synthesis utilizing environmentally friendly precursors. In this review, we commence with a concise introduction, presenting both top‐down bottom‐up strategies for eco‐friendly CQDs. Subsequently, delve into comprehensive examination CQDs' structure characteristics, encompassing ultraviolet–visible absorption confinement effects, state emissions contributing room‐temperature photoluminescence (PL). This review proceeds elucidate recent advancements modification CQDs, specifically focusing on oxidation, passivation, incorporation heteroatoms. These serve afford control physicochemical facilitating enhancement PL through decoration highly visible‐responsive is achieved by suppressing nonradiative recombination electron‐hole pairs, enabling red/blue shifts CQDs generation full‐color emission spectrum, regulating band‐gap states broaden photoabsorption range. Finally, offer an overview most developments applications fluorescent emphasizing utility biomedicine, sensors, lighting, displays, well photocatalysis.

This paper proposes a new, highly effective fluorescence test for Cr(VI) detection. method utilizes hydrogel composed of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N–CQDs), and poly(co-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid) (AMPS). The N–CQDs were successfully synthesized using simple microwave method, then conjugated with HEC AMPS. higher adsorption (99.41%) reduction rate in H1 likely stems from both the presence (absent HB) their increased free functional groups (compared to H2/H3, where block them). facilitates release (desorption) hydrogels, making it more available less toxic Cr(III). fluorescent brightness HEC-N–CQDs-g-poly(AMPS) increases gradually when is added amounts ranging 15 120 mg/L. enhancement appeared exhibit good linear relationship 15–120 mg concentration, detection limit 0.0053 mg/L, which lower than standard value published by WHO. Our study found that served effectively as probe aqueous solutions, demonstrating high sensitivity.

Carbon dots (CDs) are nanostructures containing mainly carbon atoms and abundant functional groups. With remarkable adjustable physicochemical properties, CDs have excellent hydrophilicity, photoluminescence (PL), biocompatibility, low toxicity. Although the numerous advantages make a research target for synthesizing advanced materials, some limitations pertinent must be corrected. Rare earth elements (RE) candidates doping CDs, obtaining hybrid materials called RE-CDs to optimize luminescence applicability, quantum yields. Hybrids allow combination of advantageous characteristics both RE, drastically improving their luminous magneto-optical imaging performance opening door practical technological applications. To date, no studies in literature provided in-depth analyses methods used prepare RE-CDs, characterization techniques used, challenges, critical analysis what could improved synthesis by proposing solutions. fill this gap, review initially presents detailed survey RE separately. Subsequently, addressed, as well obtainment, commonly characterizations, recent applications, from analyte detection functionality medical nanodevices. Finally, criticisms suggestions future work also discussed inspire new discoveries about potential derived RE-CDs.
