A bstract Risk-driven behavior provides a feedback mechanism through which individuals both shape and are collectively affected by an epidemic. We introduce general flexible compartmental model to study the effect of heterogeneity in population with regards risk tolerance. The interplay between epidemiology leads rich set possible epidemic dynamics. Depending on behavioral composition population, we find that increasing tolerance can either increase or decrease size. multiple waves infection arise due transmission behavior, even without replenishment susceptibles. protective mechanisms such as effectiveness interventions, number risk-averse people duration intervention usage reduces overshoot. When protection is pushed past critical threshold, dynamics enter underdamped regime where size exactly equals herd immunity threshold overshoot eliminated. Lastly, regimes does not monotonically becomes increasingly risk-averse.

Abstract It is unclear how great a challenge pandemic and vaccine fatigue present to public health. We assessed perspectives on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) routine immunization as well trust in information sources future preparedness survey of 23,000 adults 23 countries October 2023. The participants reported lower intent get COVID-19 booster 2023 (71.6%), compared with 2022 (87.9%). A total 60.8% expressed being more willing vaccinated for diseases other than result their experience during the pandemic, while 23.1% less willing. Trust 11 selected each averaged 7 10-point scale one’s own doctor or nurse World Health Organization, averaging 6.9 6.5, respectively. Our findings emphasize that hesitancy challenges remain health practitioners, underscoring need targeted, culturally sensitive communication strategies.

Abstract Covid‐19 triggered a wave of lockdowns across the world, contributing to severe downturn in economic activity. Governments responded by introducing expansionary fiscal and monetary measures. We compare health outcomes Sweden, commonly viewed as an outlier relying more on recommendations voluntary adjustments than strict lockdowns, with those comparable European OECD countries. Our results suggest that Swedish policy advice trust population reduce social interactions voluntarily was relatively successful. Sweden combined low excess death rates small costs. In future pandemics, policymakers should rely empirical evidence rather panicking adopting extreme Even if appeared act rapidly decisively, rushed implementation 2020/21 probably did harm good.

The existence and nature of pandemic fatigue-defined as a gradually emerging subjective state weariness exhaustion from, general demotivation towards, following recommended health-protective behaviors, including keeping oneself informed during pandemic-has been debated. Herein, we introduce the Pandemic Fatigue Scale show how fatigue evolved COVID-19 pandemic, using data from one panel survey two repeated cross-sectional surveys in Denmark Germany (overall N = 34,582). We map correlates that is negatively related to people's self-reported adherence behaviors. Manipulating (de)motivational aspect preregistered online experiment (N 1584), further affects intention adhere Combined, these findings provide evidence not only for fatigue, but also its psychological behavioral associations.

Abstract Increasingly, our cities are confronted with crises. Fuelled by climate change and a loss of biodiversity, increasing inequalities fragmentation, challenges range from social unrest outbursts violence to heatwaves, torrential rainfall, or epidemics. As crises require rapid interventions that overwhelm human decision-making capacity, AI has been portrayed as potential avenue support even automate decision-making. Following the extensive non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) and behavioral changes in wake of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, an interseasonal rise respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases was observed Germany 2021. The aim this study to characterize local molecular epidemiology RSV infections comparison three pre-pandemic seasons. Additionally, clinical data were retrieved from patient charts determine significance infections. detections peaked calendar week 40 2021, 18 weeks earlier than usual peak Sequence analysis revealed a close phylogenetic relatedness regardless season origin. A significantly higher amount pediatric (88.9% all cases, p < 0.001) for 2021/2022. For significant differences increased number siblings household (p = 0.004), lower rate fever 0.007), reduced co-infections 0.001). Although mean age adult patients younger (47.1 vs. 64.7, 0.001), high rates comorbidities, tract intensive care unit admissions prevailed. NPIs pandemic had tremendous impact on epidemiologic characteristics seasonality warrant further studies important pathogen.

Despite widespread acknowledgement that trust is important in a pandemic, few concrete proposals exist on how to incorporate into preparing for the next health crisis. One reason building rightly perceived as slow and challenging.Although public institutions one another essential countries should plan possibility efforts instil or restore may fail.Incorporating pandemic preparedness means acknowledging polarization, partisanship misinformation persist engaging with communities they currently are, not we would wish them be.This paper presents practical policy agenda incorporating mistrust risk factor response planning. We propose two sets of evidence-based strategies: (i) strategies ensuring already exists community sustained during crisis, such mitigating fatigue by interventions honest transparent sense-making communication; (ii) promoting cooperation where people their governments neighbours, sometimes legitimate, historical reasons.Where there mistrust, responses must rely less coercion more tailoring local policies partnerships leaders help overcome difficulties encounter cooperating guidance. The regular monitoring interpersonal government at national levels way enabling this context-specific planning.

The pandemic dramatically accelerated research on vaccine attitudes and uptake, a field which mobilizes researchers from the social sciences humanities as well biomedical public health disciplines. has potential to contribute much more, but growth in deeper connections between disciplines brings challenges opportunities. This perspective article assesses recent development of field, exploring progress whilst emphasizing that not enough attention been paid national local contexts. lack contextual limits hinders our capacity learn COVID-19 crisis. We suggest three concrete responses: building recognizing new publishing formats for reporting synthesizing studies at country level; establishing country-level interdisciplinary networks connect praxis; strengthening international comparative survey work by enhancing focus factors.
