Evening exposure to electric light can acutely suppress melatonin levels and adversely affect subsequent sleep. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis investigating the influence of evening illuminance on polysomnographically (PSG)-assessed also explored how melanopsin (expressed in melanopic equivalent daylight (EDI) affects human sleep features. included polysomnographic laboratory studies healthy humans for effects duration, pre-sleep exposures between 6:00 p.m. 1:00 a.m. From 440 identified articles, 114 met eligibility criteria screening, 21 reported type source/spectral characteristics, 12 as eligible review. Meta-analysis showed latency, efficiency slow wave sleep, overall effect sizes (95% confidence interval) 0.69 (−0.50; 1.88), 0.34 (−0.13; 0.82) −0.61 (−1.85; 0.62), respectively. Estimated EDI range 100–1000 lx yielded clear dose–response relationships latency efficiency, but not Whilst duration indicated no apparent single PSG-assessed we observed evidence relationship based EDI. Hence, may provide robust predictor non-visual responses

Humans live in a 24-hour environment, which light and darkness follow diurnal pattern. Our circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) hypothalamus, is entrained to solar day via pathway from retina synchronises our internal biological rhythms. Rhythmic variations ambient illumination impact behaviours such as rest during sleep activity wakefulness well their underlying processes. Rather recently, availability of artificial has substantially changed especially evening night hours. This may increase risk developing rhythm sleep-wake disorders (CRSWD), are often caused by misalignment endogenous rhythms external light-dark cycles. While exact relationship between CRSWD remains be established, nocturnal been shown alter humans. Daylight is ubiquitous and crucial for mammalian vision as well non-visual input to the brain via intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) that express photopigment melanopsin. Abstract The global coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) pandemic and associated lockdown restrictions resulted in the majority of sports competitions around world being put on hold. This includes National Basketball Association, UEFA Champions League, Australian Football Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, regional competitions. mitigation strategies place to control have caused disruption daily schedules, working environments, lifestyle factors. Athletes rely regular access training facilities, practitioners, coaches maintain physical mental health achieve maximal performance optimal recovery. Furthermore, participation sport at any level increases social engagement promotes better health. It is, therefore, critical understanding how COVID-19 measures affected lives athletes. We surveyed elite sub-elite athletes (n = 565) across multiple sports. Significant disruptions were reported for all factors including interactions, activity, sleep patterns, found a significant increase total time latency, as well delay mid-sleep times decrease jetlag. Training frequency duration significantly decreased. Importantly, changes sleep-related with outcomes. With spikes cases rising governments reinstituting lockdowns (e.g. United Kingdom; Melbourne, Australia; California, USA) these results will inform messaging manage population whom is critical.

Daylight stems solely from direct, scattered and reflected sunlight, undergoes dynamic changes in irradiance spectral power composition due to latitude, time of day, year the nature physical environment (reflections, buildings vegetation). Humans their ancestors evolved under these natural day/night cycles over millions years. Electric light, a relatively recent invention, interacts competes with light–dark cycle impact human biology. What are consequences living industrialised urban areas much less daylight more use electric throughout day (and at night), on general health quality life? In this workshop report, we have classified key gaps knowledge research into three main groups: (I) uncertainty as quantity needed for “optimal” physiological psychological functioning, (II) lack consensus practical measurement assessment methods tools monitoring real (day) light exposure across multiple scales, (III) insufficient integration exchange bases different disciplines. Crucial short long-term objectives fill proposed.

Light, through its non-imaging forming effects, plays a dominant role on myriad of physiological functions, including the human sleep-wake cycle. The non-image effects light heavily rely specific properties such as intensity, duration, timing, pattern, and wavelengths. Here, we address how influence sleep wakefulness in humans acute e.g., alertness, and/or circadian timing system. Of critical relevance, discuss different characteristics exposure across 24-h day can lead to changes propensity, architecture, wake electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectra. Ultimately, knowledge affects improve settings at home workplace health well-being optimize treatments chronobiological disorders.
