The coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) has influenced resource use and how people interact with their environment, changing priorities competing public health factors affecting pro-environmental behaviours at individual, societal, business political levels. We used data from an online plastic footprint calculator to explore temporal changes, purchasing patterns consumer around on-the-go during the pandemic. hypothesised that 1) people's when would change in response related government restrictions and; 2) single-use decrease lockdown periods due against leaving home. received 1937 responses, 13,544 items recorded. Most were food wrappers (54 % of all items), takeaway containers (12 %) bottles (9 %). Six out seven showed increased lockdowns, in-line our first hypothesis, but not second. Three times more used, wrapper consumption almost doubled, container than doubled. Increased occurred alongside meal lockdowns. Patterns similar between different lockdown, no significant differences number any items, or percentage respondents using them. Results indicate found it harder avoid while on-the-go, supporting evidence other studies can be driven by perceptions hygiene benefits lack "safe" alternatives. Our results opportunities reduce we provide examples successful implementation. findings that, properly applied, government-led guidance effectively support choices for reduced use, encourage reusables, increase provision alternatives, dispel myths. sudden waste Covid-19 amplifies need substantiate reduction policy promises without further delay.

Abstract Conservation funding is currently limited; cost‐effective conservation solutions are essential. We suggest that the thousands of field stations worldwide can play key roles at frontline biodiversity and have high intrinsic value. assessed stations’ return on investment explored impact COVID‐19. surveyed leaders across tropical regions host primate research; 157 in 56 countries responded. Respondents reported improved habitat quality reduced hunting rates over 80% lower operational costs per km 2 than protected areas, yet half those less now 2019. Spatial analyses support station presence as reducing deforestation. These “earth observatories” provide a investment; we advocate for increased programs governments to their vital efforts by investing accordingly.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic provides a major opportunity to study fishing effort dynamics and assess the response of industry standard remedial actions. Knowing fleet’s capacity compensate for reduction (i.e., its resilience) allows differentiating governmental regulations by fleet, i.e., imposing stronger restrictions on more resilient weaker less resilient. In present research, main fleets Adriatic Sea hour from 2015 2020 was measured. Fleet activity per gear type inferred monthly Automatic Identification System data. Pattern recognition techniques were applied trends barycentres gear. beneficial effects lockdowns endangered, threatened protected (ETP) species also estimated. Finally, fleet series examined through stock assessment model demonstrate that every generally behaves like subject significant stress, which particularly highlighted pandemic. Our findings lend support notion can be compared predators with medium-high resilience strong impact ETP species.

Abstract The Sea Lamprey Petromyzon marinus control program in the Laurentian Great Lakes is one of longest-running and most successful invasive species suppression programs world. Although several techniques are used to suppress Lamprey, relies heavily on regular application lampricide kill stream-dwelling larvae. COVID-19 pandemic disrupted from 2020 2022, which provided a unique opportunity test how populations wound counts fishes would respond. We evaluated consequences decreased effort at basin-wide level using standard metrics through focused analysis multispecies wounding Lake Ontario, experienced greatest disruption control. reduction corresponded increased adult abundance but was only weakly associated with Trout Salvelinus namaycush wounding. However, novel rate metric calculated for Ontario consistent observations by anglers managers regarding sharp increase following reduced effort. Ultimately, our research highlights that treatment critically important preventing damage stemming reductions could quickly lead resurgence abundance.

Abstract The impact of global or national crises on nature conservation efficiency remains insufficiently researched. We examine how specific threats developed during the COVID-19 pandemic in Madagascar’s protected areas, which are important biodiversity hotspots, and crisis impacted actors local communities. Drawing interviews with stakeholders from country’s multifaceted network, we identify developments individual demonstrate that socio-economic impacts by no means uniform. While unsustainable activities for purpose self-sufficiency increased nationwide due to economic downturn restrictions, larger-scale areas were linked more complex factors varied across country through distinct phases pandemic. Local alternative livelihood often failed compensate pandemic-related losses, particularly those tourism instead amplified pressure their reliance natural forest resources. Furthermore, assets exacerbated as many struggled implement projects educational programs, crucial integrating population into environmental efforts. However, despite these challenges, could temporarily intensify endeavors increasing patrolling securing additional emergency funding. Our findings show adaptive management is urgently needed organizations implementing participatory approaches involving structures project planning promising crises.
