Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a safe, effective, and appealing treatment for Parkinson's Disease (PD), particularly improving motor symptoms (e. g., tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity). However, concerns have been raised about whether DBS causes psychological changes, including changes to personality: characteristic relatively stable patterns of affect, behavior, cognition, desire. In this article, after first presenting some background information PD DBS, we examined evidence obtained from various empirical research methods (quantitative, qualitative, mixed evaluating patient valued characteristics) pertaining personality change. General limitations across include lack randomized clinical trials small sample sizes. We organized our review findings according different layers variables: dispositional traits (including pathology), adaptations, narrative identity. Though most work done on traits, there is not much that change following DBS. Little but somewhat consistent positive perceived progress toward goals number domains: routine activities, work, social/relational, leisure. Nascent identity holds promise revealing issues around self-image may be common listed strategies advancing research, highlighting opportunities related conceptualization, assessment, interdisciplinary scholarship. Finally, offer practical applications the informed consent process ongoing treatment.

Patient factors the most important outcome therapy, general. Lack of agency might be core deficit people AvPD. Their conditions improved if understand their better. We review previous research regarding psychological mechanisms interpersonal relationships that facilitate or hinder daily life psychotherapy. Methods Summarizing original literature narrative reflexive thematic analysis. Results seem to significant sense due emotional awareness, an overweight inhibiting vs. activating emotions, difficulties regulating emotions. Difficulties also related high levels attachment avoidance fear, creating strong ambivalence social needs, addition tendency subordinate others. A weak self poor narrative, self-doubt, harsh self-critique makes intentional stand increasingly difficult these people. Conclusion This gives clinically meaningful understanding strengths deficits can help clinicians map out therapeutic work, identify barriers client-agency work through relational alliance.
