Plant-derived natural products have long been considered a valuable source of lead compounds for drug development. Over 8000 different flavonoids have been described and a considerable number of new flavonoid structures are being elucidated every year. The advent metabolomics alongside the development phytochemical genetics – wherein genetic basis underlying regulation levels plant metabolites is determined has provided massive boost to such efforts.
