Previous studies report a preference for larger comfortable interpersonal distance (CIPD) in individuals with child maltreatment (CM) when being approached by others. Yet, research on approaching others, as opposed to approached, well potential effects of social anxiety and depression is lacking. We investigated if CM depressive symptoms influence CIPD mediates the possible association female stranger. One hundred ten participants 58 without (non-CM) experiences performed stop-distance paradigm stopped first feeling uncomfortable (D1) again very (D2). were associated CIPD, independent symptoms. All subtypes D2. The relationship between was partially mediated anxiety. These novel findings can help develop interventions strengthening socially relevant skills processes those affected CM, targeting alterations depression.

Abstract Objective Childhood maltreatment has been linked to impairments in social functioning and cognition adults with affective disorders. However, conclusions have limited by inconsistent findings across different subtypes domains. We conducted a systematic review meta‐analysis quantify associations between childhood (overall ‐ physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse, physical neglect) domains of disorders (bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder). also examined effect moderators mediators these associations. Methods A search was performed on 12.12.2022 which identified 29 studies included qualitative synthesis ( n = 3022 individuals disorders), 27 2957) were pooled meta‐analyses. Across studies, five examined, four two had sufficient data for (PROSPERO CRD42022288976). Results Social functioning: associated lower global r −0.11 −0.20), poorer interpersonal relations −0.18 −0.33), aggressive behaviour 0.20–0.29) but unrelated vocational functioning. Emotional abuse neglect showed the largest magnitudes effect. cognition: there no meta‐analytic evidence Exploratory moderation analyses did not identify any consistent moderators. Narrative attachment style as possible moderator, sensory patterns, anxiety, symptoms outcomes. Overall, available limited, particularly relation cognition. Conclusions Adults are at risk difficulties after exposure, an observed multiple subtypes, domains, diagnoses. Addressing problems may benefit maltreated both bipolar disorder.

Background: Somatic symptoms, such as chronic pain, fatigue, and gastrointestinal disturbances, are commonly reported in individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment (CM), which includes various forms abuse neglect experienced before age 18. Although CM is strongly associated somatic the specific relationships between subtypes these well mechanisms connecting them, remain insufficiently understood. This review examines complex interaction often coexist mental disorders significantly impact quality life healthcare systems. Summary: frequently mix "explained" "unexplained" conditions, personal distress pose diagnostic challenges. has been linked to symptoms through neurobiological mechanisms, HPA axis dysregulation allostatic load, while theoretical models emphasize roles hyperawareness, cultural factors, vulnerability symptom development. However, existing research fails account for subtypes, full range situational leading inconsistencies findings. Key Messages: Bridging gaps literature requires adopting World Health Organization’s subtype definitions ICD-11 codes (MA00-MH2Y) encompass broader spectrum symptoms. Employing rigorous methodologies, systematic reviews meta-analyses, essential advancing understanding. These approaches can enhance accuracy, support tailored interventions, promote biopsychosocial framework research, ultimately improving patient outcomes alleviating societal burdens.

To mark 15 years of the European Journal Psychotraumatology, editors reviewed past 15-year research on trauma exposure and its consequences, as well developments in (early) psychological, pharmacological complementary interventions. In all sections this paper, we provide perspectives sex/gender aspects, life course trends, cross-cultural/global systemic societal contexts. Globally, majority people experience stressful events that may be characterized traumatic. However, definitions what is traumatic are not necessarily straightforward or universal. Traumatic have a wide range transdiagnostic mental physical health limited to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research genetic, molecular, neurobiological influences show promise for further understanding underlying risk resilience trauma-related consequences. Symptom presentation, prevalence, course, response experiences, differ depending individuals' age developmental phase, sex/gender, sociocultural environmental contexts, socio-political forces. Early interventions potential prevent acute reactions from escalating PTSD diagnosis whether delivered golden hours weeks after trauma. prevention still scarce compared treatment where several evidence-based complementary/ integrative exist, novel forms delivery become available. Here, focus how best address negative outcomes following trauma, serve individuals across spectrum, including very young old, include considerations ethnicity, culture diverse beyond Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD) countries. Introduction: The concept of allostatic load encompasses the cumulative effects both ordinary daily life events as well major challenges, and also includes related health-damaging behavior. Allostatic overload ensues when environmental challenges exceed individual’s ability to cope. Identification is carried out through use biomarkers clinimetric criteria. Studies are increasingly reported on in younger populations, yet a systematic review missing. Objective: aim present was summarize current knowledge load/overload among children adolescents. Methods: PubMed, PsycINFO, Web Science, Cochrane Library were searched from inception April 2023. A manual search literature performed. We considered only studies which or adequately described assessed either clinical non-clinical populations than 18 years. Results: total 38 original investigations included this review. an association between sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., poverty, ethnicity, perceived discrimination, adverse childhood experiences) factors, consequences physical mental health Conclusions: findings indicate that greater associated with poorer outcomes pediatric possible enduring effects. results support utility transdiagnostic identification adolescents across variety settings, number potential implications.

Abstract Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been related to social functioning and cognition impairment in people with psychotic disorders (PD); however, evidence across different CM subtypes domains remains less clear. We conducted a systematic review meta-analysis quantify associations between CM, overall its (physical/emotional/sexual abuse, physical/emotional neglect), of adults PD. also examined moderators mediators these associations. A PRISMA-compliant search was performed on 24 November 2022 (PROSPERO CRD42020175244). Fifty-three studies ( N = 13 635 individuals PD) were included qualitative synthesis, which 51 260) 125 effects sizes pooled meta-analyses. found that negatively associated global interpersonal relations, positively aggressive behaviour, but unrelated independent living or occupational functioning. There no meta-analytic cognition. Meta-regression analyses did not identify any consistent moderation pattern. Narrative synthesis identified sex timing as potential moderators, depressive symptoms maladaptive personality traits possible outcomes. Associations small magnitude limited number assessing are available. Nevertheless, PD at risk problems after exposure, an effect observed multiple subtypes, domains, diagnoses illness stages. Maltreated may thus benefit from trauma-related psychosocial interventions targeting relationships

Introduction Childhood trauma is not restricted to abuse or neglect and other potentially traumatic experiences need be pondered in practice research. The study aimed collect validity evidence of a new measure exposure broad range experiences, the Interpersonal Trauma Inventory (CITI), by evaluating whether CITI provides important additional information compared gold standard childhood trauma. Methods sample consisted 2,518 adults who completed self-reported measures (Childhood Questionnaire; CTQ) psychiatric symptoms (PTSD Checklist for DSM-5; Kessler Psychological Distress Scale; Dissociative Experiences Scale). Results First, sensitivity properly detect participants having been exposed maltreatment, as measured CTQ (here used standard), ranged between 64.81% 88.71%, specificity 68.55% 89.54%. Second, hierarchical regressions showed that predicted 5.6 14.0% variance while only captured very small part (0.3 0.7%). Finally, 25% (n = 407) CTQ-negative screened positive at CITI. latter reported higher severity than without trauma, suggesting permits identification significant traumas remain undetected using well-validated measures. Discussion findings underscore utility research purposes latter’s equivalence questionnaire predict negative outcomes.
