Abstract Adolescence is a formative period for socio-emotional development which threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic. The current longitudinal study examined two aims: (1) short- and long-term effects of pandemic on young people’s mood (i.e. vigor, tension, depression levels) emotional reactivity fluctuations in daily mood), (2) impact stressors mood, reactivity, self-oriented maladaptive behavior towards rules) other-benefitting behaviors aimed at helping comforting others). In this review, we describe the development of prosocial behavior in adolescence as a critical inflection period for social adjustment. Experimental research using giving tasks demonstrates that adolescents differentiate more between recipients and contexts, suggesting increasing ingroup-outgroup differentiation during adolescence. We also demonstrate brain is partly driven by environmental influences, further underlining development. With restricted face-to-face interactions, COVID-19 lockdowns and distancing measures tested the capability of computer-mediated communication to foster social contact wellbeing.
