Parental monitoring of teens’ activities is a well-established protective factor targeted in many interventions to reduce problem behavior. However, no paper has compiled the extant recommendations on how clinicians should seek improve parental monitoring—what psychoeducation give parents, what behaviors request and support parents changing behaviors. Drawing from Society for Clinical Child Adolescent Psychology’s (SCCAP) lists empirically supported treatments adolescent behaviors, we reviewed contents 13 manualized extracted every mention monitoring, then synthesized organized content. Our review yielded 21 16 clinicians, which offer as preliminary list evidence-based monitoring. Most manuals contained fraction total (mean = 7.7 out 37) only few included concrete, detailed, in-depth instructions about monitor or implement changes Thus, it may be possible efficacy existing by borrowing content strategies other manuals. Finally, identified four major lacunae our that addressed future empirical research. The offered little advice (1) prioritize among recommendations, (2) when (if ever) decrease (3) minimize chances adverse teen reactions (4) teens using technology (e.g., digital location tracking, social media).

Parental monitoring is a construct of longstanding interest in multiple fields—but what it? This paper makes two contributions to the ongoing debate. First, we review how published literature has defined and operationalized parental monitoring. We show that often been an indirect nonspecific fashion measured using instruments vary widely conceptual content. The result disjointed empirical cannot accurately be described as unified study single nor achieving cumulative scientific character. Second, offer new formulation intended remedy this situation. define set all behaviors performed by caregivers with goal acquiring information about youth’s activities life. introduce taxonomy identifying 5 distinct types (Types 1-5), each behavior varying along five dimensions (performer, target, frequency, context, style). distinguish from 16 other parenting constructs it conflated position one element within broader parent-youth process: continuous, dyadic interplay between youth they navigate caregivers’ attempts monitor youth. By offering explicit detailed conceptualization monitoring, aim foster more rigorous impactful research area.
