Attachment and alexithymia predict emotional–behavioural problems of institutionalized, late‐adopted and community adolescents: An explorative multi‐informant mixed‐method study

Abstract
Objective
Compared
to
community
adolescents
(COM),
placed
in
residential
care
(RC)
or
late
adopted
(LA)
appear
show
more
emotional–behavioural
problems.
They
also
vulnerable
variables
linked
problems,
such
as
insecure–disorganized
attachment
and
alexithymia.
This
study
employs
a
mixed‐method
multi‐informant
approach
(1)
compare
RC,
LA
COM
alexithymia
(2)
investigate
relationships
interplay
of
concerning
problems
these
three
groups.
Method
Participants
were
174
(50

Adolescents'
internalizing
externalizing
assessed
through
both
caregiver‐reported
self‐reported
questionnaires,

mixed

interviews
self‐report
questionnaires.
Results

results
showed
RC

variables,

not
differ.
Accounting
for
the
group,
cumulatively
predicted
25–43%
19–43%
depending
on
method
assessment
problems'
informant
(all
p
<
0.01).
Alexithymia
was
an
independent
predictor
interacted
preoccupied
predicting
no
predictors
isolated
ones,
group
never
indicate
effect
rates.
Conclusions

discuss
utility

study

quality
(YCRQ).

Abstract
Objectives:
a)
To
characterize
the
previous
substance
use
of
institutionalized
adolescents
in
two
therapeutic
communities
north
Portugal;
b)
to
assess
existence
and
explore
relationships
internalizing/externalizing
problems,
strengths
difficulties,
self-esteem
subjective
well-being
those
adolescents.
Methodology:
A
cross-sectional
study
carried
out
communities.
Participants
completed
five
questionnaires:
sociodemographic
questionnaire;
Alcohol,
Smoking
Substance
Involvement
Screening
Test
(ASSIST);
Strengths
Difficulties
Questionnaire
(SDQ);
Rosenberg
Self-Esteem
Scale
(RSES);
Personal
Wellbeing
Index
(PWI).
Results:
All
67
participants
self-reported
tobacco
use,
followed
by
cannabis
(98.5%),
alcohol
(97%),
stimulants
(64.2%),
other
substances
with
lower
ASSIST
risk
scores.
Inferential
analysis
revealed
that
girls
had
significantly
better
results
Total
SDQ
than
boys
(18.7±4.75
vs.
15.1±5.52,
p=0.027),
which
was
not
observed
RSES
PWI.
There
were
positive
correlations
between
conduct
problems
opiods
use;
peers
sedatives
hallucinogens
total
difficulties
cannabis.
Discussion/Conclusions:
Our
greater
magnitude

compared
obtained
studies
students
same
age.
