Abstract Countries across the world imposed lockdown restrictions during COVID-19 pandemic. It has been proposed that conditions disproportionately impact those living with chronic pain, requiring adaptation to treatment and care strategies. We investigated how in United Kingdom impacted individuals pain (N = 431) relative a healthy control group 88) using an online survey. In accordance fear-avoidance model, we hypothesised increases perceived psychological distress would be mediated by catastrophizing. Survey questions answered period, probing patients’ self-perceived changes retrospectively, revealed people their severity compared before lockdown. They were also more adversely affected pain-free individuals, demonstrating greater anxiety depressed mood, increased loneliness reduced levels of physical exercise. Pain catastrophizing was found important factor predicting extent accounted for relationship between decreased mood pain. Perceived decreases exercise independently predicted perceptions Interestingly, actual symptoms (measured at two time points pre- post-lockdown subgroup, N 85) did not change significantly on average, but reporting demonstrated baseline Overall, findings suggest remote management provision target reduction activity could beneficial patients overcoming adverse effects
