Achieving tolerance toward oxygen during surface-initiated reversible deactivation radical polymerization (SI-RDRP) holds the potential to translate fabrication of polymer brush-coatings into upscalable and technologically relevant processes for functionalizing materials. While focusing on photoinduced atom transfer (SI-photoATRP), we demonstrate that a judicious tuning composition reaction mixtures adjustment setup enable maximize compatibility this grafting technique environmental conditions. Typically, presence O2 in medium limits attainable thickness brushes causes occurrence "edge effects", i.e., areas at substrates' edges where continuous diffusion from surrounding environment inhibits brush growth. However, concentrations Cu-based catalyst "free" alkyl halide initiator solution emerge as key parameters achieve more efficient consumption yield uniform thick brushes, even are exposed air. Precise variation conditions thus allows us identify those variables become determinants making synthesis tolerant oxygen, consequently practical upscalable.

ConspectusThe surface-tethered polymer brush has become a powerful approach to tailoring the chemical and physical properties of surfaces interfaces revealed broad application prospects in widespread fields such as self-cleaning, surface lubrication, antibiofouling. Access these diverse functional brushes is highly dependent on versatile surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization (SI-CRP) strategies. However, conventional SI-CRP typically requires oxygen exclusion, large amounts catalysts monomer solution, long reaction time, making it time-consuming sophisticated. When using two-plate system consisting an initiator-bearing substrate metal plate, we our collaborators introduced zerovalent metal-mediated (SI-Mt0CRP). In SI-Mt0CRP setup, metal(0) plate (Cu, Fe, Zn, or Sn) placed proximately initiator-functionalized forms confined which considerably simplifies synthesis wide range with high grafting densities over areas (up meter scale). In comparison classical SI-ATRP (catalyzed by salts), demonstrates tolerance, controllability, good retention chain-end functionality, facile recyclability (i.e., foil/plate). Taking advantage geometry various conformations architectures are easily accessible while consuming only microliter volumes solution without complicated operations under ambient conditions. Owing attractive characteristics, technique for functionalizing materials targeted applications, ranging from science nanotechnology. In this Account, summarize recent advances catalyzed metals (e.g., Cu, highlight intrinsic advantages featured experimental compared "classical" salt, powder, wire applied. We further discuss synthetic features proposed mechanism emphasizing external technologies' (including "on water" reaction, galvanic replacement, lithography, capillary microfluidic) integrated systems. also describe structural brushes, including block copolymers, patterned gradient structures, arrayed binary brushes. Finally, introduce that have been prepared techniques, focus emerging applications. anticipate discussion presented Account will promote better understanding advance future development practical brushing.
