Abstract The human voice is a major signal transmission modality for our species. Accordingly, perception of its quality serves as an intraspecific window into the status individual's health, robusticity, and even stature in group. Diminished quality—as may occur aging or certain diseases—is feature lessening communication modality. Here, we review underlying anatomy function that comprise producing elements—the vocal tract sensu lato—from lungs through larynx supralaryngeal modifying elements. Aspects constituent elements such folds (“true cords”) intrinsic laryngeal joints, are discussed within context how their disease degradation affect speech concomitant interpretation by listeners. considered overall effects sensory systems both humans other mammals.

Abstract Morphological traits of animals have evolved to solve ecological requirements, the optimization locomotion in each environment being one most frequent selective forces shaping morphology. Amphisbaenians are strictly fossorial reptiles that various snout shapes for burrowing head‐first underground, yet evolutionary and origins these different morphologies little known. Here, we used a geometric morphometric approach investigate head shape intrapopulational variation round‐snouted checkerboard worm lizard ( Trogonophis wiegmanni ). We took 2D photographs live North African island population. At capture site, also measured microhabitat characteristics soil compaction, samples analyze physical structure. While detected no signal sexual dimorphism overall disparity was low, found significant relationships between T. some vegetation soil. Relatively more tapered snouts narrower heads occurred sites with taller bushes soils containing higher amounts clay (i.e. harder substrates difficult excavate). hypothesise differences due might be considered scenario under which amphisbaenian initially evolved.

Abstract The Amazon rainforest has approximately 23% of its sampled area dedicated to bats, making it one the least and most diverse regions for bats in Brazil. lack sampling results a knowledge regarding accurate geographical distribution bat species. This is referred as Wallacean shortfall, which should be addressed with primary data obtained from situ collections. However, use Species Distribution Models (SDMs) can help alleviate this gap. states Pará Acre are located Brazilian Amazon.
