Sugar diets long been linked abnormal physiology in animals, making them potential candidates for mosquito control. Here, we show the impact of sugar on humidity preference and survival Aedes aegypti (Gainesville) Culex pipiens (Buckeye). Two-choice assays with high low relative (80% 50% RH) that species-specific. In comparison Cx. pipiens, various resulted marked reductions avidity Ae. aegypti, which exhibited significant differences. Among diets, arabinose significantly reduced rate mosquitoes at concentrations. Moreover, found host landing was not impacted by feeding different types. Abstract Non-nutritive sugars such as erythritol and sucralose are active ingredients in artificial sweeteners. In the past decade, research has demonstrated insecticidal properties of non-nutritive across several arthropod species. It is now a prospective chemical control option for spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, one most economically important pests small fruits. D. suzukii die quicker, excrete waste large amounts, become desiccated when fed mixture sucralose. The toxicity to fly not clearly elucidated but likely due nutritional physiological failures associated with an excess fluid excretion water imbalance, caused hyperosmotic body. diuretic processes insects primarily regulated by 3 neuropeptides: CAPA hormone, hormone 31 (DH31), 44 (DH44). To explore genetic effects on we investigated regulation key genes—capa, dh31, dh44—and their 7 corresponding receptors under different dietary conditions: + sucrose, Molecular analyses revealed that expression levels capa, dh44, were significantly altered sugar-fed flies compared group only sucrose. Through trials testing synergistic peptide injection sugar consumption, DH44 consistently increased mortality all diet groups. These findings offer molecular insights development novel pest management strategies targeting suzukii.

Abstract Attractive toxic sugar baits (ATSBs) are an underexploited method for mosquito control. For ATSBs to be more widely accepted, demonstrably effective ingredients need verified. We investigated erythritol as a additive in meals against Aedes aegypti (L.) potential future use ATSBs. Erythritol is alcohol that commonly used substitute, while also being mosquitoes. Our studies tested formulations of erythritol, sucrose, and blends both. Secondary investigations included combinations with the active Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, spinosyn, boric acid. Adult Ae. were separated into test groups provided various combinations. Formulations containing or without another toxicant, exhibited 90% mortality within 72 h observation (P = 0.03192). Additionally, appeared when combined sucrose 1:1 ratio (5% concentration each). This combination showed 24% 85% increase acid Bti, respectively, at 48 compared equivalent only 10% sucrose. appears kill adult mosquitoes, even relatively low concentrations, toxicant required. Abstract Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, spotted-wing drosophila, is a major pest of small fruits and cherries often managed with conventional insecticides. Our previous work found that erythritol, nonnutritive polyol, has insecticidal properties to D. suzukii. Two formulations erythritol (1.5M), 0.5M sucrose or 0.1M sucralose, are most effective at killing In this study, we investigated the nontarget effects these on honey bee Apis mellifera Linnaeus larvae, pupal parasitoid suzukii, Pachycrepoideus vindemiae Rondani, western yellow jacket, Vespula pensylvanica Saussure. We directly exposed larvae by adding high dose (2 µl) larval cells no significant mortality from either formulation compared water control. may encounter in field settings when host plants sprayed. Abstract BACKGROUND Spotted‐wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii , is an economic pest of small fruits and cherries. Insecticides primarily control this while alternative controls are in development. Laboratory studies show that erythritol insecticidal to D. other pests approved for human consumption. Moreover, combined with sucrose or non‐caloric sucralose can stimulate feeding quicken mortality. Before growers use erythritol, the impact on crop protection, non‐target insects, fruit quality need evaluation. RESULTS In three blueberry cherry field cage trials, oviposition sprayed erythritol:sucrose erythritol:sucralose formulations was lowered by 59%–81% compared unsprayed controls. Fly infestation (larval adult counts from fruit) 90% lower a greenhouse trial, 49% open trial 2 m : 0.5 sucrose. Infestation also 57% 1.5 erythritol:0.5 Other trials very low pressure frequent rains revealed no differences Field consistently honey bees did not preferentially visit plants either formulation, although yellow jackets visited more frequently. Abstract As a polyphagous pest, Drosophila suzukii has variety of host fruits available for feeding and oviposition, but how the nutritional geometry different hosts influences its metabolism is still poorly understood. This work aimed to evaluate D. metabolic transcriptional pathways are influenced by on fruits, sex these responses. Adult flies were allowed feed five fruit-based media. Lipids, glucose, glycogen, energy pathways-associated gene expression, quantified. Females showed an energetic easily adaptable food’s characteristics; in contrast, males’ was particularly food, predominantly those fed raspberry media who changes glucose levels expression genes associated with pathways, suggesting activation gluconeogenesis trehaloneogenesis as result deficiency. Here we present novel insight into ’s modulated depending fruits’ sex. While females high adaptability their diet, males more feeding-sensitive. These findings might be used not only control this pest population better advise producers invest less suitable based hosts’ geometry.
