Seven hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (hDESs) were characterised to evaluate their potential applicability in different industries and environmental impact. Standard physicochemical properties determined, yielding polarity density values that slightly higher for thymol-based hDESs than menthol-based ones, whereas viscosity, the trend was opposite. Regarding biologically relevant activities, antioxidative capacity antimicrobial activity of determined. Thymol-based are more potent as antioxidants, especially one with coumarin a hydrogen bond acceptor, which had highest Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value. Antimicrobial assessed on four bacterial strains yeast strain. Calculated minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) showed all possess this activity, even antimycotic effect against C. albicans observed. Furthermore, ensure safety these human use, vitro cytocompatibility tested three cell lines (HaCaT, CaCo-2, HeLa), no cytotoxic observed up 1000 mg L-1. Finally, impact by phytotoxicity test assay wheat determined selected hDESs, found be toxic, effects plant defence mechanisms induced stress. Overall, terpene-based demonstrate alternative various industries, including food production, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, variants exhibiting slight advantage relation parameters evaluated study.
