Objective To examine the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) prescribed among older patients diagnosed with psychiatric diseases and to identify associated factors. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted who visited outpatient clinics in Saudi Arabia between June 1st, 2019, May 31st, 2023. PIMs use estimated using updated 2019 American Geriatric Society (AGS) Beers criteria. Data were analyzed chi-square or Fisher's exact test for categorical variables t -test continuous compare without PIMs. In addition, Pearson correlation performed total number prescriptions Multivariable logistic regression analysis used explore Statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results Our included 306 diseases, 156 (50.98%) group 150 (49.02%) non-PIMs group. There a considerable positive ( r = 0.76; 0.0001). The adjusted revealed significantly higher risk individuals comorbid neurological compared those [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 2.48, 95% CI [1.15–5.32]]. contrast, not greater hypertension {AOR 1.67, [(0.79–3.54)]}, diabetes mellitus 1.25, [(0.66–2.34)]}, pulmonary disease 2.34, [(0.69–7.96)]}. Conclusion highlighted elevated adults setting, particularly diseases. Therefore, clinical pharmacists may play crucial role improving outcomes illnesses. Finally, future studies should additional strategies reduce this population.

Abstract Background Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are defined as drugs whose adverse effects outweigh the benefits or when more efficacious alternatives present. This study aims to assess overall prevalence of PIMs according Beers 2019 and 2023 among older adult patients with serious mental illnesses (such schizophrenia), factors associated while examining difference between two versions. Method cross-sectional included chronic aged 65 years above, hospitalized at Psychiatric Hospital Cross (Lebanon), taking least one medication daily. Sociodemographic characteristics, medications, clinical information were obtained from patients’ medical records. SPSS version 26 was used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics describe independent variables, bivariate analysis associations PIM use different factors. A two-tailed p value < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results Ninety-seven a mean age 71.21 (± 4.63) years. 52.6% female. 44.3% on polypharmacy (5–9 medications). 97.9% had both versions majority being anticholinergics (84.5%). Polypharmacy significantly correlated use. stay length presence comorbid neurological disorders negatively Conclusion extremely prevalent psychiatric patients. Raising awareness physicians criteria making them mandatory could help diminish this vulnerable population.

Results: The sample includes 371 (age ≥ 65 years) disorder; average age (72.1 ± 5.8) years. highly prevalent (66.6%). About 35.6% one PIM, 22.6% two PIMs, 8.4% three most frequently prescribed NSAIDs gastrointestinal agents. adjusted analysis found less likely men than women.
