Improper disposal of household and industrial waste into water bodies has transformed them de facto dumping grounds. Plastic debris, weathered on beaches degrades micro-particles releases chemical additives that enter the water. Microplastic contamination is documented globally in both marine freshwater environments, posing a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. The small size these particles makes susceptible ingestion by low trophic fauna, trend expected escalate. Ingestion leads adverse effects like intestinal blockages, alterations lipid metabolism, histopathological changes intestine, contributing extinction vulnerable species disrupting ecosystem balance. Notably, microplastics (MPs) can act as carriers for pathogens, potentially causing impaired reproductive activity, decreased immunity, cancer various organisms. Studies have identified seven principal sources MPs, including synthetic textiles (35%) tire abrasion (28%), highlighting human contribution this pollution. This review covers aspects microplastic pollution, sources, extraction methods, its profound impact Additionally, it explores preventive measures, aiming guide researchers selecting techniques inspiring further investigation far-reaching impacts fostering effective solutions environmental challenge.

ABSTRACT This study investigates the effects of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on Mytilus galloprovincialis , a key sentinel species in marine environments. As PEGs are widely used personal care products and pharmaceuticals, their increasing presence ecosystems poses potential threat to non‐target organisms. A total 150 mussels were exposed different concentrations PEG (0.1 mg/L 10 mg/L) over 14 days. The impact exposure was assessed through cell viability assays, regulatory volume decrease (RVD) tests, histological analysis, respectively, hemolymph digestive gland (DG) cells, gills, DG, gonads. Significant reductions observed hemocytes DG particularly at higher concentrations. Histological analysis revealed pronounced tissue damage, including hemocyte infiltration, lipofuscin aggregation, epithelial disorganization hepatopancreas, gonads, indicating PEG‐induced cytotoxicity. also impaired RVD mechanisms highlighting changes regulation. These findings demonstrate that can induce significant physiological morphological alterations mussels, raising concerns about its aquatic ecosystems.

A measurable and/or observable change in a biological or biochemical reaction, encompassing behavioral alterations as well molecular to physiological levels, is referred biomarker. Biomarker responses must be ecologically meaningful and show exposure the harmful consequences of environmental stressors. When assessing condition an ecosystem, biomarkers are regarded early warning systems. They useful for evaluating in-situ chemical impacts contaminants on biota. Although they assessed individual basis, purpose their reactions forecast population-level consequences. We hope give broad definition xenobiotics this chapter, overview processes involved biotransformation detoxification aquatic organisms.
