The contribution of the active groups in lignin to ultraviolet (UV)-shielding performance still remains unclear. In this study, we employed 16 model compounds and theoretical calculations ascertain different functional UV-shielding performance. These results showed that order on was −C═C–CHO > −C═C–COOH −C═C–CH2OH −C═C quinone −COOH −OCH3 ≈ −OH. Moreover, synergism between para-substituted electron-donating group −OH electron-withdrawing allyl aromatic ring played a major role models, whereas additive effect meta/ortho-substituted secondary role. Furthermore, found hydrophile–lipophile balance (HLB) value models also greatly affected sunscreen protection factor (SPF) model-based sunscreens. A closer HLB 8.89 corresponded with higher SPF sunscreen. commercial photoprotective ingredient ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC) had synergistic caused by π–π stacking interaction parallel-displaced stacked rings EHMC. Additionally, UV irradiation test these sunscreens prepared using EHMC exhibited good photostability.

Lignin has received significant attention as a waste product from industrial and agricultural processing, yet technical lignins are typically low in phenolic contents its use scenarios still largely limited. Herein, we report highly lignin nanoparticles (HP-LNPs) obtained by alkaline treatments followed enzymatic treatment using laccase. Urea H2O2 were used the to enhance LNPs with antioxidant properties cut down absorption visible range. As result, HP-LNPs (N-U-L-lignin) exhibited excellent properties, scavenging rates of 76.12 ± 5.64% 51.50 4.26% for DPPH PTIO radicals, respectively. The whiteness value (N-H-L-lignin) increased 43.50 56.39, thereby qualifying them natural anti-UV filler sunscreens. We have also demonstrated, first time, that can be directly food preservation: shelf life fruits, such bananas, was extended 7 days.
