Synthesis of polynorbornadienes by ring-opening metathesis polymerization and their saturated derivatives bearing various ester groups and carboxyl groups

Various
symmetric
and
non-symmetric
polynorbornadienes
having
a
variety
of
ester
groups
carboxyl
were
synthesized
by
ring-opening
metathesis
polymerization
(ROMP)
with
Grubbs'
third
generation
catalyst
(G3
or
[Ru]-III
catalyst)
in
controlled
living
manner
from
half-esters
prepared
the
selective
monohydrolysis
diesters
that
we
previously
reported.
The
thus
obtained
can
be
directly
submitted
to
ROMP
G3
catalyst,
leading
mostly
trans
structure
narrow
polydispersity
indexes.
subsequent
hydrogenation
yielded
saturated
polymers,
improving
thermostabilities
according
T5d
results.
Our
reactions
combined
initiated
have
proven
an
efficient
tool
for
production
homopolymers
well-controlled
structures
manner.

Catalytic
olefin
metathesis
using
Hoveyda-Grubbs-type
ruthenium
complexes
is
a
powerful
tool
for
creating
complex
molecules
possessing
variety
of
practically
useful
properties.
This
method
also
applied
obtaining
modern
polymer
materials
from
low-demand
petroleum
products.
Among
all
containing
five-
or
six-membered
chelate
rings,
the
commercially
available
HG-II
catalyst
most
common.

addition,
other
complexes,
which
include
Het→Ru
donor-acceptor
bond
in
ring,
often
exhibit
activity
equal
to
superior
that
HG-II.
