Melanin
and
the
process
of
melanin
synthesis

melanogenesis

Melanins
are
macromolecules
that
ubiquitous
in
nature
and
impart
a
large
variety
of
biological
functions,
including
structure,
coloration,
radiation
resistance,
free
radical
scavenging,
thermoregulation.
Currently,
the
majority
investigations,
melanins
either
chemically
synthesized
or
extracted
from
animals,
which
presents
significant
challenges
for
large-scale
production.
Bacteria
have
been
used
as
biocatalysts
to
synthesize
biomaterials
due
their
fast
growth
amenability
genetic
engineering
using
synthetic
biology
tools.
In
this
study,
we
engineered
extremely
fast-growing
bacterium
V.
natriegens
melanin
nanoparticles
by
expressing
heterologous
tyrosinase
gene
with
inducible
promoters.
Characterization
produced
-produced
revealed
it
exhibited
physical
chemical
properties
similar
those
natural
melanins,
nanoparticle
protection
against
UV
damage,
adsorption
toxic
compounds.
We
anticipate
producing
controlling
structures
at
nanoscale
bacterial
system
tools
will
enable
design
rapid
production
novel
multiple
applications.
