Essential oils exhibit numerous medicinal properties, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Recent studies also indicate that certain essential demonstrate anti-amyloidogenic activity against β-amyloid, the protein implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. To investigate whether anti-aggregating properties of extend to α-synuclein, involved Parkinson’s disease, we constructed employed a whole-cell biosensor based on split-luciferase complementation assay. We validated our by using baicalein, known inhibitor α-synuclein aggregation, subsequently tested eight commonly used food hygienic industry. Two them, citron sage, along with their primary components, pure linalool (the main constituent oil) eucalyptol (1,8-cineole, sage oil), were able reduce α-syn aggregation. These findings suggest both constituents could be regarded as potential components functional foods or incorporated into complementary disease therapies.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause oxidative stress which plays a prominent role in the pathophysiology of several health conditions, such as cardiovascular disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, importantly cancer prevention and aging/longevity. Many medicinal food plants, spices beverages contain phenolics, polyphenols, carotenoids, isothiocyanates, allicin, even chlorophyll other secondary metabolites (PSM) with substantial antioxidant properties. Therefore, supplementation our diet plant-derived antioxidants is regarded potential strategy to delay or prevent onset age-related diseases promote longevity. In order understand underlaying biochemical pharmacological mechanisms, scientists have employed nematode Caenorhabditis elegans model, easily be maintained laboratory. C. has been used for over last 25 years explore anti-aging properties isolated PSM complex plant extracts. this chapter, recent studies on antioxidant, longevity-promoting neuroprotective activities extracts were reviewed.

Essential oils (EOs) are mixtures of volatile compounds, extracted from aromatic plants, with multiple activities including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ones. EOs complex easy to find on the market low costs. In this mini narrative review, we have collected results in vitro vivo studies, which tested these validated models neurodegeneration particular two main neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) that afflict humans: Alzheimer's Parkinson's. Since EO compositions can vary greatly, depending environmental conditions, plant cultivar, extraction methods, focused our attention studies involving single molecules, those demonstrated ability cross blood-brain barrier. These alone or defined mixtures, could be interesting new therapies prevent slow down oxidative inflammatory processes common mechanisms contribute neuronal death all NDs.
