Post-translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins refer to the process adding chemical groups, sugars, or other molecules specific residues target following their biosynthesis by ribosomes. PTMs play a crucial role in processes such as signal transduction, epigenetics, and disease development. Lactylation is newly discovered PTM that, due its close association with lactate—the end product glycolytic metabolism—provides new perspective on connection between cellular metabolic reprogramming epigenetic regulation. Studies have demonstrated that lactylation plays significant tumor progression associated poor clinical prognosis.
